Ubuntu CE Discontinued

We have made a very difficult decision to discontinue the Ubuntu CE project. The demands of maintaining the distro are many. We have several other Christian projects that also require quite a bit of work. We have decided to put all of our resources into our project, TheJesusTV.com .

Before you close up the Ubuntu Christian Edition shop, can you please do a code-dump for the themes and other things that aren't available from synaptic, somewhere?

Thanks for the understanding. I am going try to get all of that stuff online somewhere for those who want it.

I am not ruling out the possibility that I may start the project up again in the future but for now it is discontinued.

The simplest probably would be GoogleCode, configured to allow anybody to download from SVN.

I have visited that site. And I have observed Ubuntu CE for a long time. I am now blunt. Please take it on the chin and think about it. It is meant with some degree of respect for your skills and some upset about the waste of them.

You have a lot of skills and you employ them badly.

Ubuntu CE was all about theme, stopping of porn and getting e-sword (closed source and dodgy copyrights for many modules) into Linux.

The website shows great programming skills, but is full of embarrassing rants of poor language (barely disguised by *****) and zero user interaction (0 comments is a frequent find).

Ubuntu CE could have been a great resource if you had made some serious effort to get the actually existing Christian Linux software into packaged format + into the ordinary repos. Instead we still have GS2.2 in official Ubuntu (years out of date), some ancient Bibledit, Bibletime, no SwordWeb (despite java webapps now being packaged) etc etc.

I can not say I am happy with this. I wish I had had the insight and guts to tell you this earlier, but coming back from the site compelled me finally.

Well, I understand your frustration. However I need to say this.

First, Ubuntu CE had very specific goals. I feel that the distro met them all. I never dodged a challenge or avoided including available Christian Linux software. I did work to include esword and other Windows software, but this was due to an overwhelming desire by many to have the software that they were used to adn liked to use. You know the core of Ubuntu CE is just me. I never expected there would be such a huge response.

Now, as far as TheJesusTV.com. The site has been around for over 2 years now and has grown substantially considering I have had zero promotion until recently. The site is actually beginning to have a lot of interaction between members. The site is still in its infancy, but I have many plans for it.

Yes the **** appear when someone uses language that is deemed to be inappropriate. I am in the process of reviewing some of these posts now. Again, TheJesusTV.com has a very small team (me). So I do not appreciate you trying to diminish the efforts and accomplishments of TheJesusTV.com as well as Ubuntu CE just because you do not agree with the direction either has taken.

So with that I do not plan to hang around here and defend my decisions. I am still keeping the possibility open for a future release of Ubuntu CE. However, for now I am concentrating my efforts on TheJesusTV.com. I also hope this forum area will continue so that users can discuss Christian Linux in general.

I appreciate your frustration: some of the Bible-study stuff I've done over the years seems to have taken second place to browsing these forums.

Although I haven't used the CE I shall be watching with interest to see where things go.

Thank you for that. I have taken so much heat for even releasing Ubuntu CE that I am still a little bit defensive.

Yeah, I see no reason for the forum area to close. There is still plenty of activity here. Also, I may at some point be able to release a new version just not right now.

I don't think that Jeremy is to blame for that. He set up a few specific goals for Ubuntu Christian Edition,and stuck to them.

The majority of Christian software for Linux is so lacking in functionality, that packaging for Ubuntu Christian Edition requires a full time commitment to writing code that will provide roughly equivalent functionality as the Windows program.

For Bible Study, there is nothing in the FLOSS world akin to either Accordance, or _Libronix Gold Scholar_. There isn't even anything in the FLOSS world that corresponds to BibleWorks 7.0, which is an entry level Bible Study Program.

Where is the FLOSS equivalent to _Sermon Builder_? Or of _Ministry Notebook_?

_Church Info_ doesn't have the features, or functionality that _Membership Plus_. offers. Furthermore, how many non-techies can install, and then use ChurchInfo? (The sad thing is that _Church Info_ is probably the best of the FLOSS church management programs.)

Functional FLOSS worship support packages are also missing.

Had a coalition of developers around Ubuntu Christian Edition congealed, then maybe some of those programs/packages would have been written/updated, and included in the Ubuntu repository.

Ubuntu CE is now bigger than the sum of its parts, and its more than being about just another fork of Ubuntu. It's about personal choice and a statement of what a platform should and could be to a Christian community.

I refuse to let it die. Since there is no Ubuntu CE for EEE PCs I'm thinking about beginning one that would be based upon the Netbook Remix kernel.

Jerome, a lot of people really and genuenely appreciate the work done on this project. But if it is to be discontinued some ones/s need to take up the torch. This project should not die. I was even thinking of making a new version for my Asus 900 Eee PC, as in a Netbook Remix for Eee PCs and calling it something like Ubuntu CEee.

I'm not very good at Linux, but I am highly motivated and interested in the seeing the further developement of Ubuntu Christian Editions.

A source dump or an explanation of how to set up an Ubuntu Christian Edition would be all the help some of us would need to take it from there and make new distros.

That's not a statement, it is an urgent and whole-hearted request in the name of the Lord Christ.

Yes, I agree that the community should still go on. I am going to try to find the time to do get some stuff online. The basics of creating a LiveCD can all be found on the Ubuntu forums. I plan to keep the UbuntuCE.com domain and will at some point when time permits release another version.
