Another 6 months, another "new theme" thread.

Supposedly a new look is one of the things in store for Karmic.

First impressions count The desktop will have a designer's fingerprints all over it - we're now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options. Come to UDS for a preview of the whole new look.

Of course, we've all heard this before:

Hey we'll deliver a new theme with the new LTS, 8.04 ! Uh, well we spent so much time on securing 8.04, that we didn't have time, so it'll be in 8.10 Now that it got pushed again, don't worry, it'll be in 9.04... (personally I predict it'll be canceled in Karmic due to the upcoming GNOME 3)

Most recently, on the 28th of April in a chatlog: : it has taken a long, long time to pull together a design team i had hoped to have that team in place six months ago, but it's still forming i think we will make good progress in the next cycle you can already see a few things that have borne fruit from that team notifications, time zone selector in installer, etc but it's fragmentary i'm pretty darn confident we'll have a new look for 10.04 but i think only pieces of that will emerge for 9.10

Wow less than one week after Jaunty and already excuses for not having it in Koala

Now to the frequent responses.

*Don't waste time on a new theme, get rid of the bugs first!* The people working on theme, aren't the people working on the bugs. This is a good thing, since overall a person who knows programming doesn't know graphic/interface design and vice versa.

*It's so easy to change, what's the point?* That may be true, but we shouldn't need to. If we want to fix bug #1, I'm sorry, but it has to look appealing. First impressions make a big deal, and if Ubuntu is in stores, it will be shown with the default theme.

Hopefully this thread can be used for a discussion on what sort of "new look" we'd like in Karmic Koala. I myself would like for whatever the look is, to be also in the other *buntus. Distros like Fedora and openSUSE have a similar look across their DEs.

If Ubuntu plans on doing more than a theme, I hope they do usability testing. If they do usability testing, they need to test it with "Joe User", because if Ubuntu wants to fix bug #1, that's who they need to appeal to.

I think that now Canonical has an art team and thus there will be theme changes in 9.10, as you can see in this email from Mark to the Ubuntu development list that introduces 9.10.

I, and a lot of others, are jaded though. Thanks for the email, I was looking for the exact quote from Mark Shuttleworth. I will edit my first post to include it.

#4

Until Karmic no introduction mentioned a new look, so I'm pretty positive this time we'll see the change (Obama anyone?)! :)

#5

looks like we will see, iv got my vbox setup and ready to go, i would say there is probably going to be a new theme this time. it and the speed of the desktop when loading seems to be the 2 main things of 9.10. well, just so long as there aren't any problems.

I got a joke email today with this image in it! perhaps we could model the theme on this:confused:

#8

There is actually a lot a play and I'm confidant Karmic will look very nice. For those who would like to try something sooner check out Impression which is available in "community-themes" from the repro.

So we don't get to use the desktop with the new look until August 27th but get to see it during the developer summit?

Ugh, I think impression is so ugly, I thought people were kidding when I first saw it.

I prefer Shiki Colors, personally.

ya impression is ugly

#13

It will never happen, i bet it's a running joke :P

#14

The theme's release schedule seems to be based on the Duke Nukem Forever release schedule.

But I still have hope for this release.

#15

ilovebrownies said: Ugh, I think impression is so ugly, I thought people were kidding when I first saw it.

I have been using Shiki Colors for a long time and it really is a very nice combination of elements.

I am hoping the new theme combines to make a whole look instead of taking one of the canned themes and slapping together a few unrelated bits and pieces.

#16

I tried a million themes but i keep coming back to the human theme. I feel its a lot nicer and more complete than many of the themes out there.

I change the window border to dust though.

I hope karmic koala does some black stuff.I somehow feel black and brown will be the new theme .:)

#17

Yes, I like the human theme too :)

#18

I like it because it's matured; definitely not because it's nice to look at. :D

#19

Impression could be close. It pairs with the new login screen. And a Koala is grey. Notice how the themes in 8.10 and 9.04 are moving in a silver grey/dark grey type of style. So I would not be surprised to see something that is a cross of Dust, Dust Sand and Impression.

Now, what color is karmic?

#20

I would love to see new icon theme.

#22

at the moment im using a theme called moomex and i really like it, its really customisable colour-wise and is very easy on the eyes:)

#23

I prefer Shiki Colors, personally.

Yep, Shiki Solors is really nice, I hope it gets at least into the system, even if its not the default.

#24

meeples said: at the moment im using a theme called moomex and i really like it, its really customisable colour-wise and is very easy on the eyes:)Seems very similar to Vista.

#25

yea its weird i hate vista, but i like how it looks.

as an operating system i prefer ubuntu but with looks i think karmic really has to catch up...

#26

The orange/brown look is terribly ugly, yet I can't really imagine Ubuntu without it; it's so recognizable.

#27

i actually do quite like that Dust theme we got with 9.04, i think it was a good blend of a darker theme but with ubuntu's look :)

#28

I'm a fan of the themes in 9.04, but I'm really excited to see what the new art development team comes up with for 9.10 and 10.04, a slicker interface is always a good thing and should help convince even more people to give Ubuntu a shot.

#29

I like the proposed color scheme, it's calm, cool, relaxed and with definitely stand out in a more positive way then brown. Don't get me wrong, I love brown, I was using a dark brown theme I created based off Dark Room with Dust incorporated... but the common person tends to dislike it.

Being a fan of darker themes (easier on my eyes and I find theme more attractive), I put together a dark theme in celebration of the new colors, Kinalol.

I've been using it for roughy a week and I find it very calming and welcome it's difference to the brown I'm used to.

I know it may be a bit O.o to some... but I thought I'd bring it to the attention of those who also prefer a darker theme. I don't think Dark Room quite hit the nail on the head. It had the right idea... but WHITE backgrounds on a DARK theme is BLINDING to me.

Dark themes do have their fair share of compromises as many developers don't consider the possibility... but overall, I'd say 90-95% of applications (and webpages) are compatibitle.

I'd like to see a _real_ dark theme provided as an alternative. Be bold Ubuntu!

They're working on the breathe icon set which looks like it's gonna be pretty cool.

Quite honestly though, I hope something similar to Dust goes into serious development. Ubuntu would look great on the shelves next to Mac and Vista/Windows7 if it had a unique dark looking theme that wasn't extreme. I think Ubuntu should use more black than grey for menus and toolbars, so right now Impressions is just disappointing.

but i think only pieces of that will emerge for 9.10

It's still incredibly early but I'm not surprised.

#33

Neither am I. Oh well, at least they're making *some* progress.

#34

They've been promising a new look since Edgy (6.10), but since this artwork team seems to be the answer to sabdl's problems with the Edgy process, maybe it will finally bear fruit.

#35

I always think that the problem with the current colours is not the actual colour (brown) but the lack of other colours. Look at the current wallpaper, its virtually one colour with texture. There are no creams or lighter themes in there at all. The rest of the colours tend to be greys and blacks.

I used to know a 'near retirement' project manager who always used to say -

The hardest thing to make a decision on is the colour of the knobs - everyone has an opinion on the colour of the knobs - because they can.

#36

I actually quite like the current human theme. True, it seems rather flat and uninteresting, but it's not butt ugly. Brown is out, orange is in, praise.

Hopefully the artwork team can make something nice, perhaps a little darker, but previous attempts to go dark made me cry.

#37

I think the traditional Ubuntu theme could work really well, but it has been let down by a poorly implemented tonal palette.

The title bar colour is quite an ugly shade (it's too green) and then you have pale / pastel tangerine selection / menu highlights, deeper 'citrus' orange colour icons (for folders etc), wallpaper that is yet another different shade (much darker brown that has much higher red / magenta content) and then, in the latest version, they've now thrown in bright yellow and red for the splash screen plus an additional burgundy / purple colour for the bar at the bottom of the GDM greeter. It's just chaos.

Feisty had a much more unified look, although the cream backgrounds still did not tonally compliment the title bar and icon colour schemes.

#38

Updated my first post with the very disappointing quote from SABDFL (aka Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life aka Mark Shuttleworth)

I do plan on constantly updating the first post with other information and new artwork...if there is any.

Yes gnomeuser, I see there are delivery dates for artwork, but I'm pretty sure all releases have those and are at best desktop backgrounds and GDM.

#39

When they say "brown has served us well..... other options", what other options could that be?

#40

LIB53 said: When they say "brown has served us well..... other options", what other options could that be?

Any color other than brown?

#41

Just bite the bullet and go for blue/green.

Personally the orange has been a put off but its so easy to adjust who cares?

I have always liked the windows colors, it works.

Is Ubuntu colors inspired by the color of African soil ?

ETA i think im biased to the landscape i live in which is very green presently :D

#42

I tend to weigh icons above colours, since colours are easy to adjust. Since i came across the Hydroxygen icons set, It has become my default. It's also the most complete outside of Human IMO. Would love to see a new and classy icon-set in Karmic.

#43

Black and *insert color*.

That should be the guiding principle.

*Any* color other than brown? I think it would be kinda random to switch to blue or something. Getting off the brown and orange thing would be a bit strange. It's not like you can't make brown and orange look good. Remember this?

#45

My opinion (that is quoted in the image in detrate's post) is that Ubuntu will never move away from orange/brown, as that's something that makes Ubuntu look and feel diferent. But, they should go easier with orange and use more neutral colors, like grey and black, keeping orange mostly on details. Think themes like Dust, Dust Sand(the one I'm using) and New Wave, I think Karmic's color scheme shouldn't be far from those themes.

Maybe less of the grey and alot more of the black? Grey should still be around (menu highlights maybe) but really black looks a bit more modern. Grey kinda looks like what we've *been* doing.

Many people doesn't like themes to be very dark, so if they used black in something, they should use some light color near it., for example, if window decoration is dark, the toolbars should be light, it can create an interesting contrast effect, if done right.

But I still really like the Dust Sand theme, even if almost nothing is dark.

#49

Some people like the look of Windows XP, others like Brown/Orange

Why not go with the Zune theme, which I find to be a really good theme with brown/orange elements.

Kidding obviously, but I do feel the Zune theme is good

#50

Working on bringing back an incredible color pallete that fell to the wayside during the Intrepid Artwork Cycle inspired by Ken Vermette for Karmic.

But I still really like the Dust Sand theme, even if almost nothing is dark. I don't mean completely dark. I mean the same pattern as Dust. Dark menus, panels, toolbars, and decorations. Other stuff should be light. Gnome looks extremely nice when you have dark panels and white text. I agree though that too dark just doesn't work.

I attached a screenshot of my current desktop. It's what *I* obviously would like Ubuntu to look like out of the box, seeing that it's customized for me. Despite that, it still has ubuntu colors and stuff.

#52

Themes are nice, but what we need are comprehensive sets.

Follow Shiki's example and you will have a winner.

Ideally, sets should also have itemized installers.

#53

Starks said: Themes are nice, but what we need are comprehensive sets.

Some themes allow you go into the customize window and change colors yourself. Do you think these themes should have subsets too, even though the user can customize it?

#54

I don't download themes with the intent of customization. I prefer uniformity and a good set should reflect this while allowing for customization.

Submitting a Metacity (or Emerald) does not impress me. This is why I consider themes like FutureLooks to be woefully incomplete.

#55

Well whatever the Ubuntu art team does won't be half complete, so i don't think you should be worried.

#56

I predict this thread will have 500 other duplicate threads and about 500000 views by the time of karmic release, all of which will result in no tangible work being done on the art front :)

#57

Actually, I think the idea of theme sets could really work in Ubuntu's favour.

Changine themes is easy, and true you could make it customizable, but giving users the simple option of Ubuntu in orange, blue, green, or grey would be fantastic. I don't trust most people (including myself) to customize their themes :P

I think this is particularly disheartening :( How the hell can we/they not manage to get that new theme done finally? Already seems very unprofessional to me, to postpone it every time...

I'm ok with partial replacement as long as they start putting things in as early as it makes sense. Only enough time to collect feedback and for tweaking will guarantee a worthy Human successor.

Can we take him to court over that?

Its getting too much now.

How much is ubuntu worth? I might consider taking it over and become the new Benevolent Dictator for Life.

#70

I bet if the community got involved and developed something we could come out with a pretty nice product. We have quite a few great artists lurking around. I believe there's something in brainstorm about tapping deviant.com for art, but how about we just start something here? I'm not the greatest UI designer (all i have on record is three Songbird themes and one lame Dust GTK edit), but I'd be willing to do what i can.

#71

Never going to happen, Just like login/experience.

#72

the comunity has already contributed many good themes/looks and still we get slapped in the face with elephant skins .

#73

There seemed to be a ray of hope when Mark said karmic is considering other options , but now it seems we wont see much in karmic koala either.

#74

ronacc said: the comunity has already contributed many good themes/looks and still we get slapped in the face with elephant skins .

We shouldn't forget that 9.04 included by default some community-themes, such as Dust/{sand} and New-Wave and also DarkRoom.

I for personally doesn't care what it looks like, system does what I want it to do. And also as always, changing themes is so darn easy :)

But for the sake of argument as how public views ubuntu on it's default theme. It does look like an bowl of diarrhea mixed with M&M's I've installed U to about dozen people, and not one word of discontent of Human theme. For what seems to be the consensus amongst all of them, they're impressed with ubuntu (and would be on any other distro as well, if they tested one)

Only one thing is making them lose their hair, and that's how some multimedia content on WWW/Audio/Drivers doesn't work, so why don't we concentrate on fixing those, rather than whining about the default theme?

#75

There is a difference between talented amateurs and experienced professionals. IMO none of those community themes - even if they're nice - would be a major step towards a modern desktop look that can compete with Windows 7 or MacOS.

#76

taavikko said: Only one thing is making them lose their hair, and that's how some multimedia content on WWW/Audio/Drivers doesn't work, so why don't we concentrate on fixing those, rather than whining about the default theme?Yes, I agree wholeheartedly - that's probably the most important thing. OTOH we keep being told that the artwork is handled by a completely different team from the functional side.

#77

MacUntu said: There is a difference between talented amateurs and experienced professionals. IMO none of those community themes - even if they're nice - would be a major step towards a modern desktop look that can compete with Windows 7 or MacOS.

I agree on that one, the community themes are nice but not playing in the same league

#78

What's a theme from *any distro* that competes then? Frankly as the community themes are better than any distro theme I've seen.

Anyway, people are quick to cry about Ubuntu's choice of themes, but won't look at the faults of themselves, and how the "community", for one thing has such a dark-theme obsession...

#79

olskar said: I agree on that one, the community themes are nice but not playing in the same league

I agree on this.

BTW,i was wondering if we could install the netbook remix theme on our desktops.

#80

everybody has different taste in themes dont they?

so why not on first start up or in the install have the option to pick a theme, so that someone can choose the one they like?

and also in the theme manager wouldnt it be good if you could also browse themes on Gnome-look.org and install them from the app, so that changing the look of their system is as easy as possible for new users?

#81

A couple of good points there IMO :)

My response was meant for the community and people viewing and thinking about replying to this thread... W00t no new theme, bummer, life goes on.

There's so much potential and energy with community and spending it to something as trivial and banal such as default theme is ridiculous. Spend it more wisely to addressing it to previously mentioned areas.

It makes no difference if Canonical has separate team developing themes, it's their business. But we as a community have more to give than to just whine about the default theme.

Ugh, I have spoken.

Put this in brainstorm. Best thing I've heard so far in this thread :) It's a one shot answer to all our problems. The only problem with grabbing content from gnome-look.org is that there's so many themes, and so many of them aren't exactly the highest quality. That could be a concern for those of us that want things to be perfect and without stains.

Well what codecs are you having trouble with? All work fine for me. Unless you're talking about having to install them seperately, which won't change due to legal issues.

Also, to sort of go along with my "the people working on the theme aren't the ones working on bugs" part, the "community" that would be supplying/critiquing themes would hopefully be more towards the artistic side, and most likely wouldn't know the first thing about fixing a bug with media, drivers, etc.

You can already do that on kde (but from kde-look obviously), it would be great if something similar was added to gnome

if you install the gnome-art package from the repos you can install themes, or rather partial themes (window borders, icons, background pics etc.) actually a rather nice little app.

im just gonna download it and have a look :D

gnome-art is a nice app but its really slow and doesnt install full themes.

and yea for those who say i should post my idea oon Brainstorm i just went to do so when i found an idea exactly the same lol

im going to vote for solution 2

#91

super.rad said: Yes it's installed by default on kde, just go to change the theme and click "get more themes"

thats very cool, gnome should have that!

#92

If you haven't checked out KDE I'd really reccomend giving it a go, as of 4.2 it's completely stable for me and has loads of cool features, 4.3 should be even better.

Back on topic, I'd forgotten about gnome-art but could do with some work and also it get's the icons/themes from gnome-art instead of gnome-look (which has better content IMO)

#93

KDE rocks. Now that we are at Karmic Koala, it would be a perfect time to switch to KDE by default.

KDE 4.3 beta will be out in a few days, and KDE is now so far ahead of GNOME that it is ridiculous.

This would be the perfect "new look." Changing color schemes is not a "new look" .... changing to KDE... now that would be something!

#94

Jupp... Ubuntu = KDE, Gubuntu = Gnome. Let Gnome die!

#95

I don't think KDE should go under the moniker "Kubuntu", I think the desktop Gnome version should be "Gnomebuntu" or "Gubuntu" (gnomebuntu sounds better) and then server edition and cli-only edition should be referred to as Ubuntu.

#96

I wouldn't mind switching to KDE if the following apps had a GOOD Qt frontend: Firefox, GIMP, Pidgin. Until then, it's gtk/gnome for me.

Ubuntu won't switch to KDE.

One day, if the KDE team can make a convincing case and cover all the use cases that is cared about, I believe they have both a right and duty to propose that they take over.

I doubt that day will ever come, GNOME is going strong and the focus of the two platforms is towards different target audiences. I don't think KDE could be in a position to replace GNOME to the satisfaction of the existing Ubuntu community while also remaining true to what the KDE users love about KDE. Mostly in that several of the design goals are directly in conflict.

I say this as one of the biggest GNOME cheerleaders there is.

For now I am happy that the GNOME and KDE camps are working together on so many standards and that we today have a situation where the developers and users conference is held together. It feels much more like everyone is pulling in the same direction instead of trying to steal users from each other. I have been here since KDE1 and GNOME1, the improvement is vast, both in technology but also in community spirit.

Am i missing something here? Installed 64 bit Kubuntu last night and i think the desktop and appearance is fantastic.

Nice boot screen, nice default colors, widgets, floating menus, lovely.

The work has already been done and would'nt look out of place as the new Karmic desktop.

In fact i liked it so much i installed it over Ubuntu and am glad to see the back of it to be honest. Orange brown and flat.

Bring on the KDE :guitar: It has the best chance of helping windows users migrate, why do the work again ???????

i just tried on alive disk and i dont like it :S

theres something about it i really dont like, i'll stick to gnome thanks :D

Shiki Colors with New Wave windows border.

I think they should hire the guy that made Shiki colors for the Ayatana desktop team.

I use Tilda mapped to F12 key.

In KDE one would use something like YaKuake

YaKuake is inspired from the terminal in the Quake game: when you press a key (by default F12, but that can be changed) a terminal window slides down from the top of the screen. Press the key again, and the terminal slides back.

It is faster than a keyboard shortcut because it is already loaded into memory and as such is very useful to anyone who frequently finds themselves switching in and out of terminal sessions.

POSSIBILITY OF NO NEW THEME DIFFRENCE IN KARMIC!!! OMG! I've gotta go talk to santa. (Would talk to the easter bunny but mom told me it wasn't real....and now that the new theme for karmic koala's gone thanks to you, i only have santa to turn too.) LOL

But I still really like the Dust Sand theme, even if almost nothing is dark.

when you are staring at a computer screen for hours and hours on end, either coding a project, or writing a paper, you'll find that a darker theme is a lot easier on the eyes. lighter themes make my eyes water around hour 2...

Starks said: Themes are nice, but what we need are comprehensive sets.

Follow Shiki's example and you will have a winner.

Ideally, sets should also have itemized installers.

i don't really think that copying somebody else's idea is a very good idea. i mean, if you go to GNOME-Look.org and look at the highest rated themes, you'll notice that the first 25 pages or so are all rated around 74% and look completely alike.

<rant>

this is really a pain in the **** for people who try to make original themes with a fresh idea and don't get rated as high only because their themes don't look like shiki colors. it seems like EVERYBODY is comparing themes to shiki or new wave but what we need is a totally fresh idea that when somebody sees it, they go "wow... thats a unique operating system" not "good, its another shiki colors rip-off"

what i mean is... XP and Vista have a unique look that everybody will associate with "windows" and the Aqua theme for OS X is what people associate with Mac. we need a theme that when people see it, they KNOW it's ubuntu, and not just any linux distro. this calls for something totally fresh, original, and appealing to a large audience.

But this is a lot harder said than done. i'm going to start working on some ideas and I hope that all the artists here that use Ubuntu would start trying to create some fresh idea's for Ubuntu that may get submitted or what not. i'm not saying that I'm the one who will be able to pull this off, but we have enough talented artists here to be able to do this...

I use "Guake" for GNOME and have it mapped to F1. I love it because you can show/hide it without it showing up in the window list or having an icon in the notification area (system tray)... but I can still have terminal stuff going on in the background (apt-get update, dist-upgrade...)

I prefer Shiki Colors, personally.

Have you tried really playing with Impression first hand, or just looking at the wiki page? I thought that and "boring" at first, but after playing with the theme it really grew on me (and it's been my choice for over two months). I like that it is completely unobtrusive, subtle and simple. Doesn't do anything weird. The flat title bars are cute, really unique, and actually quite a good idea. The colour scheme is changeable, although I prefer the default - it looks exciting and really fits well into the Ubuntu brand.

The wallpapers on Impression's wiki page are a different story, but a great thing with Impression's simplicity is it puts content first, so you can really put it over any wallpaper you want :)

In response to KDE's ability to get themes from KDE-look, I came across this project a couple of days ago.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck on Windows for the next while for Uni related things, so I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Just though I'd let people know.

Also, in regards to KDE being ahead of Gnome, it is true. You can't deny it any longer: Gnome is seriously lagging. I'm still a Gnome fan, though, and I very much look forward to 3.0.

#111

i've found myseldf sticking with shiki colors in several months now. it is pretty, relaxing and the combination of icons and theme is what matters to me. and what i really find wrong in ubuntu apperance now is the icons and not the theme.i kinda like the human theme.

#112

I didn't know of shiki colors before going through this thread : it's the first dark theme I find sleek and professionnal looking. I really think it should replace/complete the current dark themes available by default...

#113

Yeah shiki colors is one of the nicest themes i've found, should at least by included if not made the default. Gnome colors iconset should be included aswell as they go really well with the shiki colors themes (and look a lot nicer than the defualt icons)

#114

Another "vote" for shiki-colors here. They had a really nice installer app for a while as well; it would let you choose from a range of a few colours and included a colour palette etc. I think there's a notice on gnome-look saying it's temporarily withdrawn for fixes. The gnome-colors icons are quite nice as well, although personally think that the human icon set is one of the human themes strongest points.

Hey all,

I'm one of the people behind that PPA.

Installing gnome-colors, shiki-colors, and arc-colors will give you all five color variations. If you just want one color, we provide seperate packages as well:

* gnome-brave-icon-theme * gnome-human-icon-theme * gnome-noble-icon-theme * gnome-wine-icon-theme * gnome-wise-icon-theme

* shiki-brave-theme * shiki-human-theme * shiki-noble-theme * shiki-wine-theme * shiki-wise-theme

* arc-brave * arc-human * arc-noble * arc-wine * arc-wise

There's also a port of Shiki's Metacity theme for XFCE:

shiki-colors-xfwm-theme

We've submitted the packages for inclusion in Debian (just waiting for a DD to sponsor the upload) with the goal of having them synced in to Ubuntu for Karmic.

You can follow the status in these bug reports:

It's so sad that mockup of "Clear" theme is only a mockup... I think that it looks just perfect :(

I beg to differ - which just goes to show this is all a matter of personal taste. No possibility of pleasing everyone with whatever theme is used.

#122

I agree. That theme is...interesting, but really, I couldn't use it every day. I'd use it for an hour for kicks, then revert to Shiki.

I love you for stating this :)

So why people continue to argue that canonical should change the theme to please hc-testers.

ubuntu continues to raise it's popularity despite the current theme, w00t .. so refrain yourself on commenting which theme should be the default one.

make suggestions what is cool and nice themes, but please, don't try push it through like Yehova's witnesses.

I've been sticking with MurrineGlow with the Eikon icons, that seems similar to Shiki.

#125

I know themes are down to personal taste. My signature a year ago said "No matter what new theme is chosen for Intrepid, there will be people that hate it".

It's impossible to please everyone sure, but it seems like the majority in fact, do not like the current theme. Every release there is this thread asking for a change, and some reply that it's "so easy to get a different one". Those two groups combined appear to be more than the group that says "I like the current theme".

For me, it's the principle of the thing. We've been told we're getting a new theme over and over again. Every release we're told we're going to get it, then the next week we're told we're not (see first post).

#126

Funny you say that; another way of reading this thread is that Shiki Colors actually has a good consensus of agreement. Yes, it's nothing revolutionary or special, quite "ordinary" to the contrary, but we agree it looks nice. At least something that wouldn't edict much complaint, as proven in this very thread...

Offtopic, but if anyone behind Shiki is reading this, for your xfwm (and suppose metacity) theme, could make different symbol for when something is maximised or not? Sometimes I can't tell if an app is maximised, an indicator would be nice.

""Brown has served us well" but other options will be considered for Karmic Koala. "

One of Mark Shuttleworth's notes concerning art design for KK. Energy conservation and the "Eucalyptus" cloud computing projects are "planned features and goals" which "can and should serve as guidance and inspiration for artwork, especially for backgrounds."

So yes, that one in particular is just one... but representative of a direction being taken.

fair enough. I think what we all need to remember is this is an open-source, community driven distro. If the only think you want is better artwork, then get involved. Gather together different themes that would fit well, submit proposals, join ubuntu brainstorm, vote. the best way to see stuff happen is to be a part of it.

It's pointless to do so. If a theme is created, shown to the community, tweaked, submitted on Brainstorm, then Canonical will just go "Oh well we have our own Art Team, so it's not going to be default".

See: Dust.

You misunderstand my point. The philosophy behind ubuntu is individuals creating a greater whole. You, meanwhile, seem to desire an operating system where you make demands and someone else satisfies them. So my suggestions are that you either attempt to work on a theme and try to find out popular opinion of what suits the distro best, and do anything you can to aid that, or create a different distro based off ubuntu (ubuntu is, if you didn't realize, derivative of debian) as it doesn't hurt anyone else to create your own. However, the competition could and will drive creativity further, to find better solutions. So, quite politely, either do something productive or shut up. Canonical doesn't exist to suit your wants. It is building a distro to suit a wide range of people.

):P

#147

@tylerisfat - Right. So from now on, whenever anyone has an issue with the way ubuntu works, lets just create our own distro. What a ridiculous idea - with all due respect. The whole point of these forums is to hear what people think about the product, and if we all just 'shut up' then we're negating the whole process. If you don't want to read people's comments about ubuntu don't bother reading the forums.

I honestly think that the theme should have sort of an "outdoor/nature" look to it. I hate staring at random swirly wallpapers that make you feel sort of isolated.

I think the theme should be like this:

green - for icons orange - for the wallpaper black - regular text light brown - for highlighted text - and random shades of blue for the rest.

"But will it blend?"

Yes. If it's done properly.

Windows doesn't exactly have to try hard for users, does it? To most people, it's the default. They don't need to be convinced to use it, they just need to not want to run the alternatives.

its so darkly ironic to hear people continue to complain about the wallpapers available, or the appearance, when there is literally an infinite amount of wallpapers and appearance configurations available.

i much rather the canonical team work on things that are really important, like hardware support, power management, and features that actually add to the overall productivity and experience of the system, rather then spending a bunch of time trying to find a theme that people like better just so that i can change it to something else anyway.

#160

It's important for the brand "Ubuntu" that it comes with a theme that's changed by the smallest possible amount of users. It's important for us that Ubuntu's level of awareness rises - believe it or not, Ubuntu core devs get paid. No money, no Ubuntu. Mark won't throw in $$$ forever...

I don't think the theme teams will have the profession in programming, to work on other things....

I think it's the time to have a new look, I'm with Ubuntu for a while, but new user will not like the default theme ( or all the stock theme, as well )

#163

Merk42 said: Nobody reads the first posts in thread anymore do they?

I read it, I understand its different teams. My point is primarily that much of the little customization stuff should be easy to customize, rather then trying to find the look that everyone will love, because thats impossible. There has to be a default theme of some sort, and quite honestly, the default is fine. Its easy to understand for a new user, is different enough from other major operating systems for it to stand out, and if you don't like it particularly, there are others available. The 'Dust' theme is a fantastic example of a theme that looks nice (I use it with a slightly different icon set) it would not make a good default. The buttons on the upper right corner of the windows are reason enough to make them not default. They are all three the same. A person new to ubuntu would not know as instinctively which does which, and generally need a better visual clue to what is minimize, maximize, and close.

Yes, the people doing programming are not the graphic artists. Which is why I will state it again: I want Canonical to worry about performance, I couldn't care less if they make new themes. The community makes plenty, the default theme is very suitable to new users, and is not confusing. I want the money going towards performance and function, and I'll get a theme from gnomeart.

#164

tylerisfat, +1 Several times.

i like it. Something worth taking in consideration is an alternate version, with much more neutral tones, i. e. no orange on scroll bars or buttons or anything much then the title bar.

+1 Several times.

Thank you sir.

I honestly think the worst thing about the current human theme is the title bar. Inverted looks much nicer imo.

#169

i think caramello should be the default theme for karmic - it looks very "human" and is very clean.

#170

There's a new theme called Human-Reprise, that make a great modernization on Human-theme.

But, i still thinking that ubuntu needs something more modern.

Hi psyke,

I love the scrollbars. But the throbber and the progress bars look kind of empty to me, could they keep the diagonal bars or something?

benjamimgois said: There's a new theme called Human-Reprise, that make a great modernization on Human-theme.

I prefer the original Ubuntu window buttons, but this is the first Human alternative that comes anywhere close to me liking it.

Finally, some co-ordination between the title bar and highlight colours.

Sure, if the highlight colours were orange, would be great.

This is a good place to start.

In the meantime, here's an update to my modification of Human. Most of the changes are to remove "hacks" from the gtkrc code, but there are noticeable visual changes as well.

Any feedback is appreciated, as usual.

#177

Wow, great.

How could I download and test it?

#178

psyke83 That is looking pretty nice. Good work.

#179

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty/Human-Reprise

Oops, I thought that new version of Human-Reprise was on that page :(

#180

Edit: I have created a new thread concerning the Human theme update. You can find it here.

#181

It would be nice if we had a new theme that would reflect to new log on. If 9.10 has the same log on screen as 9.04, would be nice to compliment it with a theme and new icon set. What do you all think?.

#182

Been discussed a million times already, mark shuttleworth has said that the new theme wont be ready for 9.10

#183

Hey, how did I not get the first reply to this thread? :D

#184

haha I was expecting to see a post from you here. You seem to be the first to appear on anything about the lack of a new theme :P

#185

Really? No new theme again? I wasn't expecting a new theme even though it's been promised for a while now. In fact I think Ubuntu's new theme is going to be our Duke Nukem Forever, that said it still stings every release it doesn't happen.

#186

Dark menu background on black wallpaper background and barely visible radio buttons - I really hope they don't plan the new theme around the current GDM something.

#187

Hm... the air theme looks pretty good on KDE :)

#188

super.rad said: Been discussed a million times already, mark shuttleworth has said that the new theme wont be ready for 9.10

I'm not even sure a million can do it ;)

Anyway, it is planed to use the FaceBrowser for login in 9.10 http://anotherubuntu.blogspot.com/2008/11/gdm-login-experience.html

There will be a new slick and flicker-free graphical boot screen http://anotherubuntu.blogspot.com/2008/12/no-plymouth-for-ubuntu-904.html

As far as a new theme, you should wait a week or so, because there's a few sessions at UDS about artwork (like moving away from the brown color). But like Mark said, nothing major for this release.

#189

What I really want to see is some version info on the usplash screen, or a small, configurable display on the desktop. One you can turn on/off easily for those that don't want it displayed.

Just something like

Ubuntu v9.10 - 32 Bit

Karmic Koala kernel 2.6.30-6 for example, would be great.

New theme? Okay, I've no problem with that - but I'll probably change it the first day or so anyway...

Regards,

Didius

I think it is ridiculous that a thread was started for this AGAIN. Would this not have sufficed: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1140246

I just made a comment that's all!. I would prefer if Canonical and other Linux companies could focus their efforts on getting us more and better graphic/video editing apps. Equal to what Adobe has. Since they won't flinch an inch towards Linux native ports of their products.

#192

Yep, here we go with the New Theme threads again.....

I think the point was that rather than making a thread to comment, it should have been posted in the thread I made. As Regenwald pointed out, that thread is: Karmic Koala's "New Look"

#194

We're unnecessarily fragmenting the commentary here. Moderators, merge or lock this thread in favour of the original "new look" thread please...

#195

Threads merged.

#196

I really hope they adopt the theme I attached. Imho way better than human.

#197

I don't think a theme is that hugely important, and I think Mark is taking the correct steps to introduce something new and exciting to us, instead of just another set of colours and icons.

Can't wait to see what they do with Plymouth.

cl333r said: I really hope they adopt the theme I attached. Imho way better than human.

Yes I hope they make *my favourite theme* the default next release as well.. :/

Is it really a theme? I thought that it is just a mockup of AppCenter.

Didn't Canonical hire a group of people specifically to work on artwork? Either they're not producing or not producing anything worth releasing. Either way, it's throwing money out the window.

Yes they hired people, but I am sure they have acomplished more than it would seem.

#205

My new theme I've been working on for the past month is integrating well with MadsRH's wallpaper https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Karmic/Backgrounds?action=AttachFile&do=view&target=Halftone-color-wallpaper2.jpg, which I'm really digging at the moment. The theme is very dark, but not too dark using the color palattes defined in the artwork brief posted on the mailing list.

Nice work Mads :)

Swarms said: Yes they hired people, but I am sure they have acomplished more than it would seem.

Such as what? Really I'd like to know. I think maybe the GDM, somehow I also hear of them getting credit for notify-OSD. Anyone at UDS know of anything concrete (ie not just talk) that the art team has done for Jaunty / is doing for Karmic?

#207

I do.

#208

The artwork team has done a lot of work! There was an interview with Julian H. from the artwork team last UDS, so I'm sure there will be an interview with Ivanka this time too.

Yes, I can see that the colors work very well together :D Your theme look great and the Breath icons is a nice touch.

Didn't read the whole post but new versions could use more art

windows 7 and pc-bsd both come with a lot more wallpapers and themes

one thing cool in kubuntu I noticed tho is being able to install themes and stuff from kde-look directly from the apearance customization window

The default desktop background for Karmic

We are looking for help with the default background, a design brief with more information can be found here. Any and all questions should be directed to me.

You're just full of sarcasm aren't you?

I saw the things on the Design Usability Clinics in the UDS Schedule, but they were all blank.

Or are you agreeing with me that so far all they have to show for it is a bunch of post-its decorating a wall?

#216

Merk42 said: You're just full of sarcasm aren't you?

And you've been full of blind hostility and cynicism against Canonical / Ubuntu, to the point of having contributed nothing else to this forum so far, so you don't deserve any better. I don't find threads full of hatred and baseless attacks worthy of sharing factual information in, sorry. They're always a waste of time.

**Merk42]I saw the things on the Design Usability Clinics in the UDS Schedule, but they were all blank.

Assuming that by "things" you mean the blueprints, they are meant as placeholders for the schedule. The sessions are more like workshops, where the Canonical Design / UX team provide design and usability assistance to developers, mostly upstream.

No, I was just trying to trigger this exact knee-jerk response. Bingo!

What hostility? I created this thread immediately after the forum became available because I wanted it to be the one-stop-shop for all the new visual updates to Karmic. I plan(ed) to constantly update my original post with new information. Nothing new has happened yet (other than the announcement of it being delayed), so I haven't updated it. If something were shown/talked about at the clinic, I'd definitely update the post accordingly.

Yes some of the others I saw had information, sketchs etc filled in them. I assumed that the blueprints would have something once a session was over.

23meg said: No, I was just trying to trigger this exact knee-jerk response. Bingo!

I was being sincere when I didn't know what they did. I want to be proven wrong. Instead, you apparently couldn't prove me wrong and then go with the whole "dance puppets dance" response?

If you want you can start a new thread to share what facts you do know. It would be nice to see them.

A search for your posts would provide a complete and satisfactory answer to that question.

**Merk42]I created this thread immediately after the forum became available because I wanted it to be the one-stop-shop for all the new visual updates to Karmic.

Given your original post, I don't find that sentence convincing.

1) I see no indication of such a "plan" anywhere in this thread.

2) There was no "promise" (as per your favorite term) of any specific redesign goal for Karmic, so nothing has been "delayed", strictly speaking.

3) The "clinic" sessions have nothing to do with the "new look" said:**

Yes some of the others I saw had information, sketchs etc filled in them. I assumed that the blueprints would have something once a session was over.

It generally takes some time; right after the discussion there are usually just Gobby notes, and the blueprints are drafted a week or so after the UDS. But the "clinic" ones may remain empty, since the sessions (I attended only one of them) are basically hands-on workshops, and aren't intended to produce any specific tangible outcome.

I was being sincere when I didn't know what they did. I want to be proven wrong. Instead, you apparently couldn't prove me wrong and then go with the whole "dance puppets dance" response?

I have no intention of "proving you wrong".

But that sounds awfully cynical, which it seems I'm not allowed to be

Fine so I was wrong about how the UDS blueprint information works. I look forward to seeing information there in a week or so. Rather I look forward to also seeing updates in the relevant blueprints as you said what you posted was completely irrelevant to this topic.

23meg said: I will, after UDS.

I hope you post it in here, we just had a situation a couple days ago where someone else made a thread which was later merged to this one.

@Merk42

"A designers fingerprints all over it" isn't the same as "New mega ultra cool theme". Fingerprints in this context refere to the little things. You've taken it out of context and are using it for your "attacks". Hypocrisy WIN , Argumentative logic FAIL.

23meg nailed you spot on. Your sig doesn't help your feeble attempts at defence.

I didn't say that, so that's a straw man.

I'd just recommend interpreting sabdfl's pre-release announcements as "general intentions" rather than "plans and promises". Right, not even plans, because by the time the announcement is made, there will have been no blueprints, no UDS, no plans at hand yet.

I hope you post it in here, we just had a situation a couple days ago where someone else made a thread which was later merged to this one.

My thread would be in a markedly different vein, so you can rest assured that there would be no grounds for merging it.

No, your thread was to complain and bitch about the changes that you think you deserve and are unwilling to participate in seeing changes designed. 23meg seems to have actual connections and actual information worth sharing, not just jabs at canonical.

You've been taken, so just take a deep breath, its the internet, and move on. Your cynicism has been upstaged by someone with knowledge, deal with it.
