8 out of 10 times brasero will give an error while burning, occasionally the cd is actually fine but most the time theres corrupted data on it. It's been like it for at least 2 or 3 versions now so I think it would make sense to remove brasero and have another program like gnomebaker included on the cd if this problem isn't fixed before karmic is released.

#2

It's always worked super-awesomely for me, I've never experienced any problems..

#3

I know it's not just my computer/dvd drive as I have the same problems on all my computers and my girlfriends laptop, not discs either as it does it with old cdrw's/dvdrw's and brand new ones, which all work fine in k3b, gnomebaker and pretty much anyother program I've tried

#4

Better to fix it, I don't know any good program to replace it with :( K3B is not an option for me

#5

Never had any problem here :/

#6

It works well on some of my systems and not at all on others. k3b doesn't even work well for me on all systems for all things. I've found one program that works perfectly for me on all my systems for all my needs. It's not free and I don't like getting flames so I won't go any further except to say you're not alone.

#7

Yes--there is one that "seems" to work all the time----but its not free---Hint: first letter is "N"--that being said, Brasero gets the job done for me about 95% of the time--I have only 1~2 years old burners & Brasero tends to like them better than older units---I will be testing that with a Thinkpad I just bought on eBay last weekend--It is a T23 with a CDburner of that age & I'll report if it is "liked" not as well.....

#8

It works most of the time, I would say 90%. Some disc shows the process failed, but the disc works.

#9

No. I think Brasero is an excellent burner. Ive never once had an error with it. Although with Ubuntu thats not saying a much.

#10

The "N" is the only thing that does work on my older laptop. Brasero won't even consider it at all. Nor will k3b...

#11

First time I used Brasero, about 1 1/2 years back, it kept telling me that my brand new cd-r's were no good. These same cd's worked just fine with nautilus burner. I never used it again till now. So far, no glitches. But, well, you never know, do you?

#12

Ummmm....why is K3B not an option ?? You can run it under Gnome with no problems...Go to SPM and install it.. it will add the kde cores it needs !

#13

ya, every time I burn a cd or dvd using brasero i get an error message. usually the disk is fine. it leaves me a lil confused lol

#14

I have never even tried Brasero, have always used K3B

Which.....I recently discovered stands for "KDE Burn, Baby, Burn" :)

#15

MrKlean said: Ummmm....why is K3B not an option ?? You can run it under Gnome with no problems...Go to SPM and install it.. it will add the kde cores it needs !

Size is a huge issue, remember every megabyte counts on the CD, and including k3b would require sucking in tons of qt libs- fail.

There's also the issue of integration, k3b will never integrate with the rest of the desktop. This is important.

#16

I tend to agree that Brasero isn't reliable. It's junked several of my r/w dvd's. I never feel confident using it.

#17

Same here. I haven't even considered using it since. :(

#18

I haven't had much luck with brasero and I have settled on using k3b and k9copy for all CD/DVD work. The trouble is that they are KDE apps, which I presume means that it would need a bunch of extra libraries to be included with the Ubuntu install CD. Space problems perhaps?

i have never once got an error with brasero, your cd drive is probably damaged. i had that happening when mine started to fail a few years back.

Which very likely uses the same backend, so it would not solve your problem only hide it.

Has it occured to you to file these bugs?

I do believe that puts me in the big no catagory, replacing a program with one that has poorer integration only to work around bugs instead of fixing them seems like an undignified "solution".

#21

I tried brasero some time back and got lots of faulty burns even on a brand new DVD writer. OTOH K3b has been perfect - works on all my drives and machines. It has extra features too, like md5sum check and verify written data.

I agree, however, that to include it in a Gnome based distro would mean including the KDE libraries it depends as well as K3b itself. May be too big for the CD.

#22

I've been using Brasero on and off during the last 4 releases, Hardy I burned a lot of coaster, Intrepid only about 10% coasters but lots of /dev/sr0 buffer I/O errors, Januty, burns everything including dual layer with no problems, Karmic I've only burned the server iso so far, so no opinion.

#23

brassero should never have been included in the state it was in , way too particular about drives and media , thats just the kind of thing that can put off a new user in a big hurry .

#24

I'm a absolute fan of K3B, it's doing all I ever needed and never gave me an error. Still I don't think that Brasero should be necessarily be replaced. It needs fixing if it causing trouble, not replacing.

But like with 99% of all software. There will always be someone who has trouble with an app. Like someone said that Nero always works, well didn't always for me. Funny enough, back in the day Nero made me mad in Windows and K3B drove me in to Linux and KDE. ;) So, if Brasero doesn't work for you then look for something else, e.g. K3B, etc . If you absolutely love Brasero and want to use it but have trouble, help the devs. At the very minimum you can report bugs so it'll eventually get fixed.

Just my 0.02$ L&G

#25

To be honest, I never had problems with Brasero and think it's one of those programs that really work fine, with a simple interface!

#26

I've never had a problem with Brasero...This is the same on a desktop and laptop burning CD-R,CD-RW and DVD-R. You should probabably file a bug.

#27

For me Brasero is a disaster....

We need something to check this with.

K3B never fails....

#28

For a while i was using Nero because i couldn't trust Brasero, plus i disliked the Brasero interface (though nero wasn't much of an improvement GUI-wise either). But Brasero in 9.04 for me is working fine. Audio CD's, ISO's and data disk are all coming out A.O.K. Have not tried DVD's though.

#29

Works great after replacing the CD/DVD drive. I was having errors being displayed at the end of a burn job almost everytime prior to that.

there in lies the problem , as I noted above brassero is too touchy about drives and media , drives that work perfectly with k3b either won't burn or burn coasters with brassero , ditto media , I have had brassero not recognise blank cd's as being writeable and then shutdown brassero and brought up k3b and burned to that same cd with no problem , I have 2 dvdrw drives in my test box , both work perfectly with k3b , 1 works with brassero the other will write dvds ok but absolutely refuses to write to any cd , This kind of result is why some people have no problem with brassero and others hate it , it is entirely too hardware dependant .

#31

I tried using gnomebaker instead of brasero, as someone suggested earlier, but got an error in wodim, just like I did with brasero. Does k3b use a different low-level write system?

#32

scradock said: I tried using gnomebaker instead of brasero, as someone suggested earlier, but got an error in wodim, just like I did with brasero. Does k3b use a different low-level write system?

According to Wikipedia:

The actual disc recording in K3b is done by the command line utilities cdrecord or cdrkit, cdrdao, and growisofs

I have read that wodim is a fork of cdrecord.

Edit: I just had a look in synaptic to see what dependencies k3b has and it does include wodim but whether it uses wodim in the same way as brasero I don't know.

Apparently not since it's working :)

#34

Why don't they just take the nautilus burner code and make it stand alone app? Has perfect Gnome integration, and just works. Not a coder, but me thinks it isn't a hard thing to do. Call it Gnome Burning Tool, GBT:)

#35

Rainstride said: i have never once got an error with brasero, your cd drive is probably damaged. i had that happening when mine started to fail a few years back.

Not the CD drive as I said it has done it on a few computers and my main computer is a brand new build so the drive is fine. Also with the amount of people who have posted saying they also have problems with brasero it seems unlikely that it's caused by a damaged drive

Even if gnomebaker uses the same backend it burns with no errors and the discs always work fine so it is doing something differently. The problem started a few versions ago (forget which version) and there was already a bug filed with the same error and it was eventually marked as fixed in the new version but still occured. I haven't checked recently if there is still a bug report, if not I will add one.

Nice Idea.. Nice I must say. I've had some problems with Brasero as well , Maybe replace it with Infra Recorder ? Its an open source app and pretty much works ;)

#37

Yes, infra recorder is a great tool. That would be good.

#38

Ericyzfr1 said: It works most of the time, I would say 90%. Some disc shows the process failed, but the disc works.

Agree. Happened to me many times on HQ Verbatim media. At the end burn process failed, but DVD media was OK. Also it has corrupted many CD-R disc.

Mostly i don't trust linux applications and i don't trust Brasero neither, but fixing it may be easier than write something new..

Back before Brasero was included, the only reason I installed it was because the Nautilus burner lacked a progress bar to show how much space you had left. If they'd just added that to Nautilus, it would have been sufficient for most people's needs for data.

It appears that Brasero now supports making actual video DVDs, which I don't recall Nautilus ever doing.

#40

Note that Brasero has some "hidden" options you can expose via gconf-editor. See: /apps/brasero/config/

There are three flags you can attempt to set to workaround drive bugs. If you are having problems in Brasero & have re-recordable media to test, you could try experimenting with these flags, one at a time.

#41

Brasero annoys me in two ways, one is that it can't import playlists (m3u), second is that it crashes for me when i drag-n-drop mp3s on it. K3B all the way for me.

#42

Since Dapper Drake, I'd never had any issues with Brasero, until Jaunty. Since then, it routinely fails and/or throws out error messages.

The problem isn't with an individual machine - it happens across all 6 computers, and they all have quite different hardware.

I got fed up making shiny coasters, so I've given up on it, switched to K3b, and haven't had a problem since.

#43

I had issues with brasero in Intrepid, it would freeze upon .mp3 that was fixed.

Gnome is integrating brasero, so yes, it's should be the default app. Both k3b and brasero uses wodim, with k3b some extended features.

Most issues seems that brasero has trouble using wodim.

#44

I like Brasero.

When we bought this box it had Vista on it. Vista informed me that 15 RW Memorex CDs were bad. I put them in a stack.

Switched to Hardy and Brasero. Ran that stack through brasero and found that Vista had mad it seem that there was something on the CD when there wasn't. Brasero fixed all but 1 of them.

I admit to Brasero screwing 1. Another 13 and I may get peeved.

#45

I haven't had any problem with Brasero for 3 releases and 2 different burners.

Next to perfect program.

#46

I had to finally switch over to K3b, was getting way to many errors with brasero on hardy, and intrepid, and Jaunty. K3b has never given me a problem.

#47

If you are burning 5 or more Dvds per day, brasero is a disaster.K3b is very good but its deps is killing me.Gnome needs a better burning application like nero linux.

#48

Brasero use to work fine for me until I upgraded hardware, I wonder if it has anything to do with SATA drives (what my new Linux system is using)

Only other thing to note is that the SATA DvD burner doesn't have its region code set yet (never used it as a player), doubt that would affect it, but maybe worth mentioning.

The people who never have problems burning and verifying ISOs (this is where most seem to have issues, not just burning files), are you using a PATA or SATA burner?

#49

My SATA burner dose not work well. It came with the box and didn't work for crap under Vista either.

I need to replace it. I think it is the DMR firmware on it.

#50

Brasero needs to stay. It works just fine. If you keep having burn error problems, look for the problem elsewhere. More than likely, it's your burner, your system resources or something of that nature.

K3b is a suspected hardware killer here. We've had 5 dvd burners die in house. All were less than one year old. All were on machines that used K3b. All were different brands/models. All began with door opening/closing issues and progressed to no read/write ability. We've had no dvd burner failures on machines using a burn prog other than K3b. K3b is the only common denominator. We stopped using it and burners stopped dying.

Just about everyone who says Brasero doesnt work right for them on all ISO's usually have it work fine and error free with another burning program like K3b (which isnt perfect either, dunno if this issue is still around but on another computer I remember K3b would almost always fail the optional verify on all ISO's) So its not the drives unless its an issue with those drives and Brasero itself (and not all other programs) in which case, Brasero is at fault and that issue should be addressed.

I suggest that whomever has problems burning CDs or DVDs in Brasero should file bugs and help improve the program for everyone. Keep in mind that Brasero was adopted as a "sanctioned" GNOME application, so there would be considerable resistance against replacing it in a stock Ubuntu installation.

What are the real alternatives, anyway? K3b uses QT/KDE, so it's a non-starter in terms of feasibility (just like the recent thread asking whether VLC can replace Totem).

#54

Im having more problems with K3B then with Brasero ...

But Nautilus burner is the Best :)

#55

super.rad said: 8 out of 10 times brasero will give an error while burning,

I've experienced that as well in 9.04. But I bit the bullet and purchased "Nero for Linux" back in the Ubuntu 7.10 days. I still think Nero is the best tool for the job. It just works and I continually get updates for free. It was well worth the money!

#56

Sometimes Ubuntu priorities are so hard to understand to me. Like, when I started using it (7.10), it was full of fancy eye-candies, but wireless hardly worked. Same here: we're making such a fuss over Plymouth or a new theme, when we have a mission critical app that basically doesn't work for 50% of users.

On my laptop, it gives error messages almost every time. Sometimes they're fakes, but sometimes what I burnt really doesn't work. Today, I was blanking a dvd-rw with my desktop and in the meanwhile I was burning a dvd with my laptop (my desktop's burner is a bit old, about 3-4 years, but my laptop's is new). Result: the dvd-rw is now unusable (Ubuntu won't even mount it) while the burning failed, wasting a dvd.

I tried Nero linux too. Worked the first time, than failed twice in a row (same files).

I was thinking that maybe my burner was faulty, but:

  • When I had Vista installed, I never failed a dvd.
  • I tried the k3b everyone was making a fuss about, and it actually did work. I burnt the files that both Nero and Brasero failed multiple times.

Anyway, I'm going to trash my desktop's burner and get a Plextor, which are said to be the best. Let's see what happens..

#57

I didn't have any problems using Brasero. Just one small issue. It can not burn .image files (Apple format). It was a fun to guess how to burn it under linux, while (thanks to Google) I found a post in some forum that K3b actually can burn it, no matter of the error messages :) And it was true. So K3b is maybe really more powerful ;)

#58

Other than k3b which used to me my preferance what else is as good.

#59

in my computer has problem with my usb dvd drive everytime i try to erase a cd or dvd, i switch to nero linux and no more problems

#60

Replace it with what? If there's problems with it then report bugs and get it fixed. There's no need to write a completely new burning application.

#61

+1 Nautilus burner is an unsung hero :)

Replace it with what? If there's problems with it then report bugs and get it fixed. There's no need to write a completely new burning application. well, i dont personally have an opinion on this issue really, but gnomebaker would seem to be the logical option if it were to happen.

#63

It's my understanding that Brasero is better maintained and more up to date than GnomeBaker. Now someone might prove me wrong on that but I think it would be silly to replace Brasero with GnomeBaker.

#64

ad_267 said: Replace it with what? If there's problems with it then report bugs and get it fixed. There's no need to write a completely new burning application.

Exactly. I'm not an expert in the field, but my guess is that the one at fault is actually the backend. So why not make Brasero use k3b backend, or anything else working correctly? I don't think we must necessarily change the GUI

I filed a bug sometimes ago. They said it was growisofs fault, and they were going to switch to libburn, if I'm not mistaken. Now with 9.04 I'm still seeing that. What should I file? Brasero fails almost anything I try to burn?

What are you trying to burn? Are you sure it's not your recording media that is bad, read cheap...

The strange thinga bout Brasero that I've noticed is that when you burn the ISO of ubuntu 9.04 and it checks the CRC (or whatever) it never matches, but the CD works fine anyway.

I tried with 2 different recorders. One of them is new and never had problems with other programs. Plus everything I burnt since yesterday with k3b works. Anyway I'm buying an excellent dvd-recorder, I'll post what will happen.
