Yes, after Karmic Koala, what is next? "L" is next eh? Do we get a chance to vote for the name of the future distribution, as a community? :) I think we should. Just an idea... By the community, for the community!

Well 10.04 will be a LTS release. If we look at the previous ones, there seems to be a trend.

Dapper Drake Hardy Heron

The adjective describes it as stable, or fit and tidy. And the animal has been a bird.

So I propose...

Lasting Lark

A lot of people have suggested Lusty, which can mean "healthy" but most people would probably think of the other meaning.

What's the other meaning? My dictionary only showed me "healthy".

#25

Well lust means sexual desire, so I would think most people would see lusty as someone who is having strong sexual urges.

Or maybe that would just be here in the USA.

#26

And the UK! You aren't the only group of people on the planet who speak English.

Call me noob, but I could've sworn I heard about a warty warthog...

Warty was the very first Ubuntu release. The alphabetical naming convention really started with Edgy Eft, followed by Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon. Prior to that there was Breezy Badger and Hoary Hedgehog but I can't recall in what order they were released; only that they came after Warty Warthog.

Thx, I got it.

So they shouldn't call it Lusty.:P

Almost forgot to mention Lubricious Lobster has a strong following.

I think there's a petition or a Facebook page or something in relation thereto for those who might be interested.

Suggestion for version 10.4: Lusty Llama. Love this combination!

Other suggestion: Loyal Labrador. It's how an OS should be!

10.4: Lusty Lark. I love birds for LTS releases!

One more: Lithe Lynx. It's time for a feline!

Sticking with birds: Lusty Lapwing

Lordly Lion - It is time for Ubuntu to be the King!

Another one - Lively Lemur

Suggestion for version 10.10: Merry Meerkat. This name comes from a Slashdot comment in reply to the announcement of the first Ubuntu release in 2004. The post states, "I want the 'Merry Muircat'[sic] edition. It would be faster and lighter than the warthog."

10.10: Modest Mouse. Like the band

Potentially 18.04: Ballsy Baboon.

Marlonsm said: Lusty Lynx?

Lynx sounds like a good name. Connotes efficiency sleekness etc

Not sure on the lusty angle...

EDIT: I hope the M gets called Meerkat.:D That would totally rock. Might be a bit problematic on the pronunciation side though. Most English speakers get it very wrong.:( According to African popular belief (mainly in the Zambian/Zimbabwean region), the meerkat is also known as the sun angel Meerkats demonstrate altruistic behavior within their colonies ^How perfect is that for a product of an opensource community?\\:D/

I never suggested that the USA is the only place that speaks English. However, there are a lot of words that have very different meanings depending on where you go.

-edit-

But I'd still like the adjective of 10.04 to represent stability, as has been the trend thus far.

 • lark
 • lemur
 • lynx
 • lion
 • leopard
 • lobster
 • langur
 • llama
 • loon
 • leafhopper
 • lovebird
 • lizard

I think whoever decides the animal must choose an animal *from* Africa...

I don't see LIGER in that list:). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=191cPadaxCk if you have never seen one. or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77tlgJN8J-Q)

#35

I see it being *something* Lark, Lion, or Lizard.

I don't think Canonical would go with Leopard, for obvious reasons...

or longhorn for that matter.:)

#37

Leaping Liger FTW. (If they can use a fictional animal for Jaunty, they can use a crossbreed for 10.04.)

Of course, once we get to "T", it will have to be something with Tigon.

#41

Leapin' Lizards, Daddy Warbucks! no-one has mentioned this one on this thread, even though it has been mentioned elsewhere

#42

Well probably this time a Female name like Lepricon's Lavelle Or Light Leopard, for an animal name (It is like Apple Mac OS X r5...)

#43

Luscious Lionfish

#44

Lethargic Lichen...?

Maybe not.

Loveable Labrat?

Again, probably not.

Liger is not good as it will never be naturally. Because its a product from a Lion and a Tiger. Lions and Tigers don't live in the same areas on the world - so in nature there wouldn't be Ligers.

Ligers are not able to reproduce so everybody who hears the name in connection with Ubuntu thinks: "Ubuntu is dead soon"

I would go for Lively Lovebird as it is an LTS and so it has to be a bird.

#46

Rainstride said: or longhorn for that matter.:)

So it means Longhorned Leopard is out of question? :lolflag:

#47

Lexical Lepidosaur

#48

Lavish Longhorn

#49

Languishing Longhorn..

oh, sorry.. that was taken. ;) Later to be renamed Vista! :lolflag:

#50

What about Learned Leopard? Ubuntu has taken this and that from open source projects and in a sense you can say it learned from them. And Leopard because they're pretty sweet XD

#51

Lithe Liger FTW!!

#52

see my sig :P

#53

How about Lubricated Lobster?

#54

Litigious Lemming

Maybe that would suit a Microsoft product better.

#55

i have an inside source that tells me that 10.04 will be "Maniacal Manatee"

bigm141414 said: Leisuresuit Larry?

This one has my vote! I loved the Larry games.

#57

Precocious Penguin?

Something penguin related would be cool.

#58

I vote for Laughing Locust.

Laughing sounds good. Ehehe lusty and lubricated :lolflag:

Longhorned Leopard. Hmm... We sound like we are taking on two OSs at the same time. :D
