According to a report in LinuxPlanet, the old init and runlevels are going to be replaced with upstart in Ubuntu and Fedora. What do you guys think? Anyone familiar with upstart?

Upstart was first introduced in Ubuntu in version 6.10. Since then nothing has happened to actually make use of its features, beyond the SysV compatibility mode (old init system).
i believe they are rewriting upstart from scratch. once they do that and stabilize it it's gonna land in ubuntu.
I'm looking forward to it---"should" be faster :)
Can't wait to get a modern event-driven boot up process, yes till now upstart has been used in system five compatibility mode, that is, all it does is spawning a macro-task which goes through the rc scripts like ol'd good init always did since the dawn of time. Morevoer, Upstart should also consolidate a few classic unix daemons together such as "cron" and "at".
Upstart 0.5 has been promised for quite a while.

That really doesn't sound like anything that will make it into 9.10
Is this like Xorg where we loose the ability to make changes in the name of "improvement":confused:

That is what I want to know. Do we gain or loose with this?
