You should subscribe the ubuntu-changes list to find out the packages rolling in.
Also UDS is the place to discuss what is going to be included in 9.10 final release, not a single decision has been made yet.

Karmic wont be released before in October so I think we are getting KDE 4.3.3 or something on the final release.

I agree, the next version of KDE desktop will have more features, eye-candy, Etc. Plus it's always nice to have the newest thing.

So it means a lot longer than I thought because debian/sid is still at 4.2.2 AFAIK 4.2.3 is in queue until 4.2.2 goes to testing, and experimental is at 4.1. Just heard that 4.3 beta 1 won't make it to experimental either.

According to the bug comments upstream, this functionality works in the prerelease versions of KDE 4.3. Since that's the case, I will be marking this bug as "Fix Committed". The bug will be marked fix released and will be closed once KDE 4.3 snapshots enter the development version of Kubuntu 9.10 next month.

No. The kubuntu experimental ppa currently has 4.2.3 in it. Until the beta is officially released, the tarballs are only available to certain developers in order to give them time to prepare updated packages. As a result, until the Kubuntu developers prepare updated packages, you most likely will not see them in any PPA.

I've bee looking frantically to testdrive 4.3, via liveCD or anything. I'm eager to get my hands dirty once it hits the PPAs :guitar:
I have been compiling trunk for the last couple of weeks. It takes a lot of disc space and time to do it. But then again, 4.3 is worth it.
Would love to have the ppa-s though. They will make live so much easier. Compiling the SVN really makes me appreciate the packagers, it is not easy getting all the features of KDE integrated in the right way.

Another extremely cool thing about Plasma is it's ability to become anything you want it to be. So a user in KDE 4.3 might have a desktop that looks like this, if that is his wish, without having to use external software

Aye, I've seen that but as I understand they're just mockups, so it's not yet sure that theme will make it. KDE 4.3 still looks to be impressing though.

Not all the time, the early builds of KDE4 sucked. KDE4 is still sub par in my opinion, until it gets the features and stability of KDE3 I wont use it on a regular basis.
I don't know about those features of KDE 3.5 (and *yes* I used to have that on Hardy) which are apparently missing from 4.2 you speak of? I do know about a lot of new features like the shift to frameworks with "hot swappable" backends (switch from gstreamer based playback to xine and vice versa on the fly).
... Anyways: to comment on the screenshot posted earlier: there is no dock there. It is the Quicklaunch plasmoid (configured with preferred apps) + dictionary etc. plasmoid/applets inside a resized Panel plasmoid. I have a similar config (on the top of the screen actually) running on this machine since Intrepid. Looks nice nonetheless, though. :P

Getting the same here today. Some kde/qt4 libs are also broken until the rest of the packages are updated.

Karmic Koala's repo's. but it's not even at alpha 1 yet so it's not advised to upgrade unless you know what you're doing

Running still Jaunty 4.2.2 Anyone tried to setup fileshare via Dolphin->[any folder]->Properties->Share Doesn't work for me, is it just me?
Asking here since total n00bie concerning KDE, switched main desktop to it during final stages of Jaunty.
Just tried that (right click -> properties -> share -> configure sharing) and I got a solid error message: "SMB and NFS servers are not installed..." (which is true, I don't have those).
But looking at the greyed out configuration options: there's (a) share home folders only -aka simple sharing; and (b) advanced sharing stuffs with permissions and what not. But I just use VSFTPD for that. *shrugs*

I don't even get that one... :( "kmcshell --fileshare" launches but that's it.

Sorry, I think KDE 4.2 has moved beyond this point of discussion. It IS stable, it HAS the features (not all KDE 3 had, but a lot of others KDE 3 was lacking). If you still want to use KDE 3 that is OK. My mum was happy with windows 98 until 2008 as well.

I have the same problem as of yesterdays karmic repo updates. I had to backlevel the kdelibs and plasma packages to get everything working again.
I tried again just a few minutes ago, thinking it was a mixed version issue, but the end result was that I just had to backlevel a whole lot of other packages that were updated to depend on .85 :(
Right now I'm installing gnome. I'll just use it until the KDE packages settle and I see whether or not there's a genuine bug to report or not.
Watch out for plasma atm it & xorg are using 100% of my cpu & turning my laptop into a toaster.

Desktop may be "back" but 4.2.85 (4.3 beta 1) packages are not all installing properly, some may be broken or "held back" etc...

My Jaunty upgrade from KDE 4.2.3 to 4.2.85 was a little bit difficult as I had to force some packages to install before everything fall into place (and luckily not into pieces). First impression: works, with some small glitches here and then. The icons in the system icon area seems to have a small offset to the right, thus the rightmost icon almost touches the border to the system notifications icon. Small, but nice improvements in usability.
The Plasma Network Manager widget will not connect to my wireless network. It trys to connect and popups a password prompt every couple of minutes.
The version installed is;
plasma-widget-network-manager 0.0+svn966653-0ubuntu1
Is this the correct version? Seems to be the only one I have available.
[edit] Wired connection is working fine, just seems to be authentication on the wireless connection which is the problem. All connections work from Gnome.

I have that problem in Kubuntu 9.04 too. I think I saw a bug on this and it was given high priority so it should be fixed soon.

Thing is it was working fine before the 4.2.85 upgrade.
From the Beta 1 announcement the following feature is listed;

Not sure if kdebase-plasma is being used now, it only provides the folder view. There is now a new updated folder view package, from my previous post i've removed the kdebase-plasma package and installed plasma-widget-folderview instead.

For compiling and all that jazz you should look up kde.org website for developer info... you install/download the source then install cmake package then do:
"cmake ." then "make" to build stuff mostly...
i'm having problems with the taskbar. for some reason it aligns applets to the left and stickes them together. any fix for this?
i believe there is a new "spacer" widget... i had similar alignment problems, just added spacers all over the taskbar...
Oh yeah, about the spacer: after adding one to the right, the problem was fixed... but it stay fixed after I removed the spacer.

Grr working fine on my work computer, but just upgraded my home one and I don't get any panel loading, just get a couple of widgets in the top left of my screen.

ark doesn't seem to be working anymore :(
Opening an archive from Dolphin results in a seg fault from ark. Ark can be opened by itself, but opening an archive seg faults again. Also, the open button on the toolbar is disabled, although the file/open menu is enabled.

Still running Jaunty here, and the Air theme was available via Get Hot New Stuff. Then I just symlinked it into root's theme folder, did kdesu systemsettings, and now it's everywhere. :3
And holy craps, I didn't even know about the kubuntu ppa. I've only been using the kubuntu-experimentals one, so I was understandably confused when I read about people being offered to upgrade to 4.3b1 packages. Downloading now~
I'm having trouble because I can't get kdebase-runtime-data or kdebase-workspace-bin to install, and can't figure out why. I'm reverting to 4.2, but does anyone know how to solve this issue? I'm using Kubuntu Jaunty.
Well, it took some convincing to do (--force-overwrite) but it's finally installed.
The only bug I see so far is that the network manager applet shows multiple entries for my wireless essid, and basically scales outside the bounds of my vertically-challenged netbook screen.
Ark seems to work properly, and I didn't get any issues with spacing or other panel oddities. YET. :>
sadly for me it didn't worked so good the upgrade messed all my desktop, no icons, no panels and the oddest of all, it shows like it is cutted into pieces and misplaced, with the top at the bottom and viceversa, even the wallpaper, and the mouse comports like half my screen is not desktop ( no option when rightclicking, and so) the part that seems to be not mine is nicely painted in white and grey squares and i found no clue still about solving this i even deleted my .kde folder, hoping that it will solve the issue, but no result any advice is welcomed

no use, thanks for help after a restart i got an unusable system, and even recovery mode did not helped i had to reinstall kubuntu
even after reinstallation i get (after restart) an error (something about plasma widget) and after logging in just after console login (even if i get repair X in recovery mode, i have the same error) i keep having the same square desktop (with no right click options and so) compiz works, just kwin sems messed up should i stay away from 4.3 beta for now?

something wrong with your plasma.
Most of these problems sound like packaging issues. To solve these, first fix your system with synaptic(more directly effective) or sudo apt-get -f install (less directly effective, but good if you don't have synaptic. If anyone knows another way to get to a non-broken system without synaptic, please pitch in)
Then follow these instructions: (they worked for me)
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo dpkg -i --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/*.deb
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install plasma-widget-folderviewAll I had to do on a few occasions was:

Just keep upgrading --some of the combinations (in particular with outdated kdm and kde-window-manager) don't work; but if/when you get/have an up-to-date system things should be running smoothly.
I just want to add that I had to issue the commands posted above about 3 times before everything was installed. And I made sure before rebooting because the first time I tried installing this KDE 4.3 beta 1, my computer couldn't find a KDM. So I had to reinstall everything.
Now that I have KDE 4.3 beta 1 up and running. A few things I have noticed.
1.) Seems like it uses more CPU. I don't know if this is the new plasma or what. But when running firefox, sometimes it is pegged at 100%
2.) [BUG] I am unable to edit/change stuff in the System Settings>>Advanced>>Login Manager. Everything is grayed out. The only way for me to change is to cli kdesudo systemsettings. Double clicking on the Login Manager no longer brings up a password prompt.
3.) [BUG] Mouse wheel on top window titlebar set to "shade/unshade" doesn't work. It acts like it is shading up, but the window stays open.
4.) [BUG] Double clicking on an image file I get an error opening up Gwenview. ``` We are sorry, Gwenview closed unexpectedly...Details...Executable: gwenview PID: 17048 Signal: 11 (Segmentation fault)
5.) [Bug] Text to speech doesn't work. It starts to speak, but is broken and stops. I have tried changing its settings to phonon to alsa...nothing.

1. No idea really, I was using Gnome with Jaunty, switched to KDE for Karmic, and although I've used KDE before I can't really tell if there's any difference.

I did recently have some performance issues after updates, although I didnt see any significant CPU hogging by any of the processes, screen repainting from plasma was definitely slower, mainly when maximizing a window. But seems bit better today.

Have seen this problem (the system acting up by throwing out a few national energy reserve's worth of batteries) since Jaunty. And since for me it already starts at boot time, I doubt this really is KDE's fault...

It actually is KDE's fault. The borked plasma is using as much CPU as possible. If you run top from konsole you will see that xorg & plasma are fighting over the resources. It was fixed for me 2 days ago with a force over-write. My laptop was so hot that I couldn't hold it & had I had to go to extreme powersave mode to stop it from frying.

It is good to see others are having these same issues and hopefully they are fixed soon (re: Vorian). I do a lot of photo editing and the not being able to open photos in Gwenview is pissing me off. I have to open them in gimp which isn't meant to view photos inline.
Another issue I found is in Dolphin. Before changing to KDE 4.3 beta 1...in 4.2.3 Dolphin when viewing photos in a folder and mouse over a photo it would show information on the right hand side in the "Information" box. It still shows information, but the size of the photo isn't there anymore. For example, it would show "48x48" This is important when viewing a folder full of pictures and helped in choosing which one to edit. No more...sadly. Anyone know how to get that back or if it will come back?

plasma and xorg are humming nicely for me, using anywhere between "0%" and 4% when not really doing anything. I'm running Jaunty though. Self-compiled -30rc6 kernel with KMS enabled, and Intel drivers from xorg-edgers.
update-notifier-kde however seems to freak out on me whenever there are updates available. The taskbar icon it creates is garbled, and the python process soars to max out cpu usage. Obviously it sticks like that until I killall python.

I think KDE will get it right for karmic. At least i hope for them...

Thanks, I removed python-plasma with no adverse effects. I still have python-kde4 from 4.2.3 though. I wonder if that is affecting the plasma high CPU issue or if it is firefox not playing nice with the new plasma.
One feature I think would be nice is the ability to lock the taskbar so it cant be deleted. I wish I had a dollar for everyone I have had to talk through deleting there config file so it will recreate the taskbar.

Why would you do that? that defeats the purpose of plasma. A better solution to this problem is to have panels and desktops saved so they can be restored after being deleted, which is already being worked on.
You should just tell them to right click and hit "Add panel" then put the stuff they want on it. Oh well, they say bad advice is self perpetuating.

Since KDE is in full bug squashing mode towards the 4.3 release it's worth reporting bugs to bugs.kde.org if the crashes are producing backtraces. At the very least find the bug on kde's bugzilla and make sure you can't add any more info, or it hasn't been marked as fixed in trunk already.
Get the relevant *-dbg package if the crash handler complains of lack of debugging symbols. Probably one of:

Intel graphics with xorg-edgers ppa enabled, correct? Sarvatt has been helping me debug this (or rather, the other way around :3), and a workaround is to set KDE to "do nothing" upon closing the lid or whatever event you had set it to turn the screen off at, and modify /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank to look like the following. Backup first.

fiYou can't have it lock the screen either, or KDE will evoke dpms and stuff goes bad.
Basically, (for me) when KDE does dpms ("turn display off" or "lock screen"), it will hang as soon as I close the lid. Opening it up just greets me with a black screen. Furthermore, using xset to force dpms (xset dpms force off) is recoverable from if you force it back on (xset dpms force on) before some 50 seconds have passed; after that, something happens and it hangs. So even with KDE told to do nothing, the script that's run when you close the lid will still call xset and evoke dpms that way, which will result in a hang (50 seconds later, for some reason).
Hopefully a fix in the driver itself will pop up soonish.
The bug has been isolated and pushed to xf86-video-intel master. A package of the fixed driver is available from xorg-edgers.
I just got the Air theme but it looked much whiter than shown in the screenshots. Then I realised it is transparent and the colour it displays depends on your wallpaper.

the easiest way to install the latest air is to do:

Anyways, I have the 4.3 beta 2 installed from the kubuntu experimental PPA (found a few pages back when beta 1 came out, now updated to 2).
Does anyone know if this would ever be updated to the RC1? It is 4.2.90 right now and this RC1 is 4.2.95. I would like to get it updated to install a few things that depend on it.

It stays at 5% on the progress bar copying files and then stops. I'm doing this from a Live USB...don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Might be better off burning the image to a CD and installing? I always have problems with liveusb, though that may just be me.

Since KDE 4.2.95 updates went in, my gcal resource seems to be broken. KOrganizer freezes on startup when the gcal resource is activated.

For tripinva, does this happen on a new user as well? if something has b0rked your settings?
I haven't tested it on a new user yet (quite busy) but I can do so later I suppose. No other KDE applications appear to be as slow as Konq though.

Instead of waiting on the experimental PPA for KDE 4.3 RC1, I went ahead and installed via the jaunty backports ppa. I finally have 4.2.95.
Anyways, can anyone explain why I am unable to change my ksplash theme? I have changed the KDM and everything else. But every time I change the ksplash from the Default to one that I made it changes back to the default one after logging out.
I have tried everything...from copying to /user/share/kde4/apps/ksplash/themes..., to copying it to /.kde/.../ksplash/themes..., and have even tried CLI sudo systemsettings and changing it that way. Nothing works...
++ A few other things...
- System settings "Printer Configuration" shows an error.
- System settings>>Advanced "Login Manager" doesn't bring up the kdesudo prompt to actually be able to change things.
- And I keep getting plasma crash error logging out. I am unable to copy the log from it as it doesn't stay up long enough. This started happening on KDE 4.2.90 (4.3 beta 2).
