I have just completed the latest batch of upgrades, and open office has been removed. Why is this?

Just checked again, it has not been removed, but wont upgrade!

after updating with update manager go to synaptic and look at upgradeable , you can install OO 3.1 from there , you have to select them in the right order to get them to go , If I remember right select the second one first and that will drag in the rest .

Maybe should ubuntu remove OOo completely and include AbiWord

Spreadsheets, I prefer gnumeric anyway, but afaik, all pure gtk presentation programs have failed for one reason or another. For that if you're trying to avoid openoffice, I'd go with gimp or inkscape and export to pdf, but that's a bit less intuitive (despite still being able to look nice).
OpenOffice Impress is just fine.
I agree, just explaining a scenario where someone can still function without openoffice.org.
