First I would like to say this is a project I would like to do over the next week, I have lots of experience programming in school, I could make a class to store almost anykind of useless data. However I have very little real world experience, especially with linux.

I just put Jaunty on my laptop, and would like to write an application that periodically, every 30s-5m, checks the exposure from the webcam to tell how bright of area I am in, then adjusts the brightness accordingly. This way if I'm outside, it will turn the brightness up. If I'm in the pitch black, it will turn it down and save me battery.

I am nowhere near capable of doing this on my own, and would like it if someone could help me out, walk me through it, and teach me a thing or two.

Thanks,
