Ubuntu will not install on my P2 which currently has PC-BSD on it and im thinking of installing Debian as the base install seemed to work. What im wondering is how many of the cd images would I need to get the base and Gnome installed on it? Then im going to have to find the ethernet card and do something fancy with the com port mouse. PC-BSD just does not turn my crank on a P2

You only need the first one: it has desktops (Gnome, KDE and perhaps a few others) included. But the second one has things that are nice to have; I believe Firefox and abiword are on it, as well as the rest of KDE.

You can read the included packages on all of the CD's on Debian's website.
