is there a VRS that works on Ubuntu?

I hope this is the right place to post this.

I have a friend who's deaf and one of the things she use her computer as a video phone with a video relay service and I'm just wondering if that can be done on Ubuntu or other version of GNU/Linux. If so I would really like to know about it so that I can encourage her to try Ubuntu.

Can you find out who's their VRS provider?

Sorenson provides a VP200 for deaf, but if your friend does not have a TV, your friend needs to get a TV tuner that is compatible with Linux (stay away from AverMedia AverTV ATSC H788 -- it doesn't work with Linux). This is quite complicated, so if your friend is not using Sorenson VRS, there should be video chatting applications that might work with other VRS services.

Make sure your friend gets a webcam that is compatible with Linux.

I don't know of any VRS services, such as CSDVRS, ViableVRS, etc. that work with instant messaging applications that includes support for webcam.

Another option would be a web cam. Amsn web cam works with msn clients. Empathy works with Jingle.

Wikipedia has a list of Video Relay Service companies. Check and see of one of them supports Linux.
