anyone using lxde?

I have an older laptop that I want to use to teach my son (13) programming (python). He should not need internet access often but there may be times. I was thinking of installing Ubuntu CE but the gdm is too much on a default install. I have XUbuntu (not CE) running fine and may do a UbuntuCE to xfce conversion but before I do I thought I'd check out lxde.

On a side note, I'm also thinking of hacking the kernel so if you know of any 'gotchas' that would cause dansguardian to fail I would appreciate a "heads up".

LXDE is nice, but I recommend Fluxbox for an older laptop... As a matter of fact, I am using LXDE tools in Fluxbox, such as PCmanFM as a file manager...

As of myself, I enjoy Fluxbox with Nautilus as it gives me the freedom to ssh or smb into other PCs in my local network...

Keep in mind, in Fluxbox, the Nautilus command is:

[exec] (Nautilus) {nautilus --no-desktop --browser}

I haven't find anything faster than Fluxbox, with its ease of use... It seems to use less resources than OpenBox...

That may or may not work for my son without some configuration but it has a lot of appeal for me "out of the box". I think with some hacking the interface can be made to look like just about anything so I'll play around with it on my own. I will eventually teach him systems and let him configure his own but I don't want to distract him from his studies and this would certainly do that.

I used lxde for a short period of time on my openSuSE box. It was pretty good and I enjoyed.
