The New York State Loco was approved last month. Now we need to get some activity going in the State's largest city. If you currently live in the New York City area and are willing to attend an Ubuntu event please post here. This will help us plan some events for the Big Apple in the near future.

I'm about 20 miles from the city. I'd be willing to come to an event during this summer or on Friday evenings/nights and the weekends.
As I mentioned on the mailing list, there's a Debian NYC group that's very active, and is working hard for DebConf10 which will be held in New York. DebConf is the yearly conference for the Debian Project, for both developers coordinating together and interested users of Debian/Free Software.
If the team does decide on something, we could get a lot of help (and interested participants) from the Debian group.

Bronx. Have a lot on my plate these days, but I would definitely be interested in attending some Ubuntu events in the city. I'd even settle for a happy hour meet in the East village (sorry young ones).

I will be honest I am still looking to get an organizer down there... someone to seize the reigns and organize an event. I will assist as best I can from Rochester. Please PM me if you want to work on something... I might be able to get give-a-ways, etc... if you can plan the event.

Each year the Debian project, which develops Debian GNU/Linux (from which Ubuntu is synced from every six months), holds a developer conference. Debian Conference 2010 (DebConf2010) is in the United States for the first time, and more specifically at Columbia University in New York City. It will take place August 1-7.
Most of DebConf is highly technical. The first day of DebConf, however, is Debian Day, which is open to the general public. Debian Day will take place from 10 AM to 6:40 PM on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Columbia University in New York City.
Registration is required but is free.

Debian Day will take place from 10 AM to 6:40 PM on Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Columbia University, New York City, New York.
After ten editions in nine different countries spanning four continents, and for the first time in the United States, the Debian project is holding their annual Debian Developer conference, DebConf, at Columbia University in New York City. DebConf includes Debian Day, when it opens its doors to the general public. Debian Day kicks off DebConf, is free of charge, and open for everybody interested in Free Software. During this event, there will be a full day of talks on several subjects such as free software in government, design and free software, free software advocacy as well as string of talks about the Debian project and operating system.
The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free and open operating system. This operating system that we have been creating is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Every year, DebConf allows new and existing Debian project participants from around the world to assemble, share knowledge and ideas, make collaborative contributions to Debian, build tighter community bonds and improve communication within the project.
We would love to see you join us at Debian Day. Registration is required but is free.

Hi everybody! I'm new the the local ubuntu forums and community but have been using ubuntu since 7.04 and recently started using 10.04 as my main OS instead of dual booting and am in the process of migrating my server to 10.04 server now too because 10.04 is that good!
I'm a sysadmin in DUMBO, Brooklyn and willing to help with anything I can. I'm no super elite coder but I have a decent working knowledge of ubuntu, certainly enough for end-user stuff. If nothing else I would be happy to help with basic stuff like graphics and content. I have no problem helping with menial tasks, being the new person to the group and what not;) The greatest city in the world deserves the greatest ubuntu team in the world!

Welcome to the team Rollin. I just approved your membership on LP. We do not have a very active group in NYC from what I know -- I would suggest trying some 'Ubuntu Hours'.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to assist -- I am in Rochester though so I will not be able to make it there in person.
