I appreciate the work you guys have done and I'e recommended it to a few of my Christian friends, but I think Ubuntu CE sounds too generic. Ubuntu Muslim Edition has been Sabily for some time, I think you guys should find a more creative name too.
A better and more inventive name?

Viva, I'm a newbie here, so I would quickly acquiesce to anyone more senior to me, but I do see merits to your concern. When I discuss Ubuntu CE with a friend or coworker, I always have to distinguish it from Ubuntu. An original name might help with evangelism efforts for sure.
Dan
so what is different in that edition anyway?

Whilst a change of name is desirable, I doubt that will happen unless a foundation has been established to handle distribution and support issues.

That would only be if Ubuntu CE was no longer updating based on the Ubuntu distro, right? If David et al continued to use the new release of Ubuntu, couldn't Ubuntu continue to be the main repository? I mean, all we're talking about is a name change. Granted, I don't know all of the ins and outs of the GPL, but it seems to me like it's not impossible.

Maybe.

A change name implies a change in management structure and organization.

For Desktop version is not much different, except a few packages that could not be found in ubuntu repository. But those few packages could make a different for Christian families.
But for server edition, it is completely different as it is live cd. It comes preinstalled with neccesary software for church, but also could be used as desktop as well.
For the name, we are here because we carry ubuntu name. I am not sure if we change name, may be we should migrate our forum to somewhere else.

Ok, I buy that. It might be rough having to host the forum and everything. I can see that.

Ahh, fair enough. Thinking about it again, it'd be poor marketing to change the name too.

Whilst changing the name of a product, or company requires careful consideration, it need not be "poor marketing" to do so.
Were an organization is to provide commercial support for "Ubuntu Christian Edition", then a name change would be mandatory.
Basic issues for a potential foundation are:
- Host for source code;
- Host for the web forum;
- Host for mailing list;
- Host for documentation: Wiki;
- Host for Internet based localization and translation: Pootle;
- Host for disk images;
It should also be noted that Ichthux migrated from being a distro in its own right, to a metapackage for Ubuntu. One major reason for that change was logistics.

Hi,
If ever there is a name change may I suggest "Linturgy".
PAX
Tom :)
Is there a reason why changing the name would suddenly mean breaking away from Ubuntu? Could we not retain "Ubuntu Christian Edition" as a sub-title for whatever we choose, and retain the existing infrastructure? Or am I being naive?
Is David of UbuntuCE thinking about changing the name or creating a meta package for use on other Linux distros and breaking from Ubuntu? I'm kinda getting that hint on this thread.

No. At the moment I prefer to rely on ubuntu as it would give us a more stable schedule and consistent development. I would challenge myself to keep up with ubuntu development schedule.
As for changing name, I am still open to suggestion, as long as we could still use ubuntu forums.

Under the current situation, a third party organization can not provide:
for Ubuntu Christian Edition.
- Commercial support;
- Niche marketing;
- Funded development;
- Paid R&D;
Suppose an organization wanted to have booth featuring Ubuntu Christian Edition at The International Christian Retail Show 2010 is scheduled for 27 - 30 June 2010 in St Louis,MO. Under the current setup, and guidelines, that would not be possible. At best, an organization could have a rebranded version of Ubuntu Christian Edition, but one that excludes the current art work, and a couple of other things.
BibleTech 2010 would be a much better place for an initial Ubuntu Christian Edition booth. However, I'm not convinced even a marketing effort there would be permissible under the current guidelines/rules.

AFAIK, neither Jereme nor David are planning on changing the name.
I'm looking at this strictly from the POV of marketing Ubuntu Christian Edition, and what would be needed to get it into churches, Christian Schools, Mission stations, and related organizations.
For the record, I'm also looking at/for the software that Ubuntu Christian Edition currently lacks, that a SOHO, church, school, or related non-profit would need.

Just to chime in, I personally don't believe a name change is necessary, since the Ubuntu name carries some credibility with it, and Christians looking for an alternative OS would know what level of usability to expect. If anything, someone may come up with a creative prefix for Ubuntu CE, similar to the naming convention of Edubuntu, or Kubuntu. Jesubuntu? :-k Nevermind. That one doesn't sound quite right.

A name change isn't necessary, _unless_ either an organization either provides commercial support for it, or a formal foundation is created.
Were an organization to provide commercial support, I'd expect it would privately label _Ubuntu Christian Edition_, and then discuss a name change with the project developers.
If anything, someone may come up with a creative prefix for Ubuntu CE, similar to the naming convention of Edubuntu, or Kubuntu.
Under the guidelines issued by Canonical, it has to be something that is dissimilar to Ubuntu, and known variants.(As best as I can determine, _Ubuntu Christian Edition_ was grandfathered in. Future distros won't be able to utilize that style.)
Jesubuntu? :-k Nevermind. That one doesn't sound quite right.
It also has been taken.
