The report refers to 9.10 but I think they mean 10.04
It's all over on Twitter now, but still want to know if this is really true or not.
I like the name "Lynx", sounds cool! Article doesn't mention what's in store for that release though - wonder when we'll find that out?
Actually... if you read the article, where it links "straight from Mark Shuttleworth", it simply shows a twitter search. Could this be fake?

Also, a Canonical representative just confirmed it by me looking up and saying, "Lucid Lynx?" to which he replied, "Lucid Lynx."
I'll call it "10.04" then. :P

Not a bad name indeed. Lynx, IMO was the best animal to choose, I just wasn't sure about the adjective, but Lucid is good.
"Lynx" was apparently trademarked by Apple back in 2003 when they grabbed all the feline names. I'm not a lawyer, but isn't this a potential problem?

What about the web browser lynx then?
It's prior art, so surely the tm is invalid, as lynx browser has been around almost as long as the Internet as we know it.

Lynx is also the name of a popular deodorant in the UK, can't imagine it being a problem.
Plus, it's a code name, officially, it's named "10.04".

Trademarks can be specific to certain kinds of products, so a web browser and an OS both called Lynx wouldn't necessarily conflict, but two OSes named that would.

Lucid Lynx is the name of the game. Although... the edit is not complete, the bold fonts for L L combination are not taken (look at the page, I don't know how to explain).

Yes it will be(most likely) a LTS. Heres some info straight from mark:
When we did Ubuntu 6.06 LTS we said we’d do another LTS in “2 to 3 years”. When we did 8.04 LTS we said that the benefits of predictability for LTS’s are such that it would be good to say in advance when the next LTS would be. I said I would like that to be 10.04 LTS, a major cycle of 2 years, unless the opportunity came up to coordinate major releases with one or two other major distributions – Debian, Suse or Red Hat.

Right. Lucid Lynx is likely be an LTS.
But there are some rumors that the next LTS will be 10.10, not 10.04. From the link you posted: Debian is aiming for an 18 month cycle, which would put their next release around October 2010, which would be the same time as the Ubuntu 10.10 release. Potentially, then, we could defer the Ubuntu LTS till 10.10, coordinating and collaborating with the Debian project for a release with very similar choices of core infrastructure. That would make sharing patches a lot easier, a benefit both ways. Since there will be a lot of folks from Ubuntu at Debconf, and hopefully a number of Debian developers at UDS in Barcelona in May, we will have good opportunities to examine this opportunity in detail. If there is goodwill, excitement and broad commitment to such an idea from Debian, I would be willing to promote the idea of deferring the LTS from 10.04 to 10.10 LTS.
Well I'm thinking that KDE 4 should be very mature by next April. The 4.3.1 release that is currently in Karmic feels pretty solid. I was thinking that the Kubuntu guys could spend some time creating a new theme for KDE for Lucid. The default Oxygen theme is very pretty, but why not create something unique and as polished as the brown and gray theme that has been standard for many Ubuntu releases?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a regular release. Gnome 3 is around the corner but it could be pushed back to 2.32 ie. 10.10.

Hey I think I found it
Due to GNOME3 not arriving in time, 10.04 will still not have a new theme. So the only way to attract people is to fool them into thinking this is a Mac OS version. Lucid implies that we're going to fully utilize all the Mac hardwave so people will be satisfied about the switch.
For those of you clamoring for either a massive paradigm change for GNOME3 or even a face lift with a theme, don't worry, it's coming in 10.10, which of course is a full year after Windows 7 and some time after Chrome OS. Here's hoping we aren't completely irrelevant by then!

I think what will have swayed the decision is that Lucid Lynx sounds (and sorta looks) like Lucid Linux ;)

Canonical Does know and besides it came straight from Mark Shuttleworths mouth, which was announced at Atlanta Linux Fest.

We've been having a good-bad alternating name thing going on for a while now. Hardy - good. Intrepid - *duh* bad! Jaunty - good. Karmic - wtf!? *Karmic?* So we were due another good one. But instead we got "Lucid". Grrr!!
If I chose my OSes by their names, I wouldn't upgrade to 10.04. But since it's the LTS, and since I'm not so petty and shallow to actually care that much what the thing's called, it will most likely find its way onto my desktop. But *Lucid*? Bah!!!

Just read about the announcement on Facebook. Lynx is good, but not sure about *Lucid* for LTS. No biggie. What's in a name? Performance, compatibility and ease of use is what matters most.

I mostly agree but I think Karmic is the best name yet personally! It sounds kinda cool, but also deep and spiritual! For some reason it has an aura of a really great release ^_^

Yeah thing is though people won't call it Ubuntu Lynx (which would sound quite cool), they will call it Ubuntu Lucid I would imagine.
