is Moblin the future of netbook Ubuntu ?

I was wondering if any of you fine readers knew the inside scoop about Netbook Remix and Moblin.

If Ubuntu is going to put effort in developing Moblin, then are they going to continue improving UNR ? or not. I have an Acer Aspire netbook, I really like Netbook Remix 9.04, I see that the Moblin has its own forum here, but Netbook Remix does not. Does that mean that the Ubuntu leaders are not gonna continue with Netbook Remix ?? It seems like they are making efforts to improve Moblin, and not Netbook Remix. Can anybody here tell me ? :confused:

My guess is both will be developed for next couple of releases anyway. I think that one of the reasons Moblin has its own sub forum is because of the tie in with Dell.

My question to you is, have you used the UMR? In my opinion, Moblin is the future of netbook Linux. It's slick, its fast, and most importantly its easy to use. UMR is the first distro of any kind to fully support my hardware, and that is impressive, since I'm using an HP 1120NR out of the box.

If you have tried Moblin and you didn't like it, why? Either way, you can probably be assured that both UMR and UNR will be codeveloped for the next release or two, but one will probably become dominant at some point in the future. My money is on UMR.

Its good in theory but it still needs improvements before its ready for prime time. The icons are not labeled and users are not clear on what each of them does. And it offers no wireless support OOTB. Ubuntu is going to have redesign and improve it based on user feedback to make it a user-friendly OS for netbooks.

Thank you, Norman, I haven't tried it yet, but after reading your post, I think I'll wait until it DOES have reliable wireless ootb. I still would like to know if Ubuntu plans to abandon UNR , or not.

Wireless OOTB - works fine with my AAO

Good in theory - Remember Moblin Karmic Remix is not due for release, Moblin is due for Karmic +1 (Lynx)

It actually would be smart for ubuntu to contribute more to moblin, or hell even the otherway around, especially with chrome OS as a soon to be competitor, especially since moblin was originally designed by intel, and not many people can pronounce ubuntu, let alone know who or what it is.

ubuntu netbook remix and ubuntu moblin remix are totally different. and it is expected that moblin remix is a one time release

Ubuntu has committed to providing a Karmic based release of Moblin, which is called Ubuntu Moblin Remix. In additional, Ubuntu is fully continuing to develop Ubuntu Netbook Remix which will also be released for Karmic and future Ubuntu releases. So expect UNR to be around for a while.

FYI, Moblin upstream developers are Intel, and UNR upstream is Canonical. Ubuntu/Canonical is committed to giving Linux users the choice of netbook UI's and that is why it is supporting both Moblin and UNR.

thanks bfiller, that is good to know, i love Ubuntu nbr and cant see how i would get past them discontinuing it, even if its for moblin (which i do not like very much) i couldnt give that up.

Funny how I found this while searching for info on UNR. (I wish it had it's own forum.)

I'm using UNR on my Acer AS1410 and my Dell Vostro 1400. So far I love it. It's is such a nice change of pace from the standard Ubuntu desktop. I don't put anything on my desktop so Remix makes great use of it.

At some point, I'll give Moblin a try, but from what I've seen of it, I'm not sure it's for me. (Heck, maybe I'll check it out right now!)

(While I'm here, does anyone k now if it's possible to enable multiple desktops in UNR? I like to keep a few open at a time to keep my development stuff separate from my personal stuffm's the only thing I'm missing at this point.)

Interesting. I didn't know Ubuntu was involved with Moblin. I'm going to give it a try on my HP Mini 1000. So, UMR is the same as what can be downloaded here: http://moblin.org/

no, that is just regular moblin, to get UMR you need to go to one of the ubuntu mirrors that have all the beta versions of karmic, and it should be there

What is used as the default web browser for UMR? I noticed that Arora is also available and Firefox is not installed by default.

Moblin is going to take a little more getting use to. I haven't quite figured out what it's all about yet, so I'm keeping an open mind until it hits me.

As UMR's only significant difference to UNR is the UI, then I think the best option is to continue to develop both. Like Gnome and KDE options on the desktop distros, giving netbook distros a UI choice is a good idea.
