Hello: I am a newbie and hope that I am not in the wrong forum.

Recently I lost the majority of my tongue and with it the power of speech. I am trying to figure out how to have my GNU/Linux computer running Ubuntu 9.04 speak text that I write. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you, Jim Rimedio <snip>

You can use any of the text to speech (TTS) engines. For example you make espeak say something with a command like "espeak hi".

Some of the TTS engines are

espeak - A multi-lingual software speech synthesizer

epos - Text-to-speech system

flite - A small run-time speech synthesis engine

festival - General multi-lingual speech synthesis system

Don't forget open-sapi that is still under development but is becomming a valid TTS solution.
