Whaddya think? Are we going to get shafted again? To be fair, Karmic turned out very nicely, though somewhat short of a radically new theme. But we've been hearing about the new theme since Hardy. Will it pan out this time, or are we going to be waiting forever?

For Karmic, you got a new usplash, new xsplash, new GTK theme, new wallpapers and new icons.
How exactly do you define "new theme"? If you mean "something not brown", then say what you mean.
Considering we got a different look for Karmic, and Lucid will not have GNOME3 (and as such not GTK+3) by default, I say 'no'.
I don't see this happening as 10.10 will probably be using gnome 3.0 technology. It will be (at least somewhat) different altogether. Why create a new theme now, just before moving to gnome 3.0? I don't see it happening, and frankly there are (and always will be) more pressing issues, at least for me.

Actually i think that they will have whatever GNOME releases. Since 2.30 should be GNOME3 LL will be based on GNOME3 but as I understood it, it will have the same GNOME2 interface and not the crappy Gnome Shell.
I just hope they smooth out the discontinuity between GDM and session design. IMO the brown decorations plus the vibrant orange wallpaper don't match the "new boot experience". Other than that I like the 9.10 changes and don't need another Human refresh. :P

10.04 is a LTS - therefore it will most likely be 9.10 with bug fixes and the like.
All the neat stuff will begin again with 10.10.
You know it's not very difficult to install a theme yourself - I mean what's the harm in just keeping it as-is and allowing the user to customize the theme?

Wow you are absolutely right I mean that's never been brought up ---- oh wait yes it has, it's all been talked to death.

As Merk42 pointed out, this argument has been brought up many times before, and the conclusion is always that a nice default theme makes it more likely that new users stick around, or even agree to try it out after seeing it running off the LiveCD or, eventually, in stores.
I voted no, by the way. I think the colors and GTK decorations will be tweaked slightly to match what was proposed at the end of the Karmic Beta cycle, but nothing revolutionary, as 9.10 WILL BE BASED ON GNOME 2.28(or at least the last version not called 3.0).
I am "hoping" so--Mark is talking up Ubuntu as the Windows 7 "alternative" & something lighter than the current Xsplash/GDM & "fresher" than Human would really help.....

But no specific mention of a theme, nor even a certain release.
So I'll go by what I said before, nothing else new theme-wise until GTK+3
I don't understand why New Wave isn't the default. It's already included, and it looks twice as stylish as the existing default.
I voted yes simply because I really hope they do. The chocolate brown/orange combo has to go. It's awful.
Ubuntu needs a lighter, cleaner default theme for a more professional out-of-the-box look.

Have you ever installed vanilla Gnome? It looks like Windows 98 (IMO). When you install Ubuntu, they've designed a default theme that looks pretty enough, and looks almost nothing like default vanilla Gnome.
This is why having a modern, attractive theme is so important. Yes, experienced users will change the theme to their liking, however new users probably won't experiment with it right off the bat, and if they boot up into something that reminds them of their computer desktop from 11 years ago, they will laugh and use Windows XP or 7. This is why we have the pretty theme we have now!
This is why the theme is so important to some of the community, because they want people to not be turned of by its looks.
P.S. Seriously, do an install of Arch Linux, and install Gnome, its pretty much vanilla Gnome, and take a look at the default icons, theme, colors, window look & feel, etc.
the first thing i do after installing ubuntu is to install a new theme which by the way sometimes don't integrate well. all my friends which i have tried to convert to ubuntu were simply disappointed to see the themes available, no transparency, poop colors, and overall unattractive even after enabling all the effects. and plz don't tell me to go to gnome-look, half the stuff there is crap, and the other half looks like its been done either by a pure geek or half-heartedly. don't get me wrong but ubuntu needs a good looking, professional theme, atleast at par with the current os genre.

I disagree. I prefer to see a darker, blacker theme.

I think some quality themes need to be added, but not necessarily the default theme. I would vote for Azenis to be added (see sig).
Unoficial Humanity GTK theme is nicer than current Human theme. But metacity is horibble. They are still using those dumb XP Luna style buttons, so regarding new theme in Lucid i am skeptical.
There is propably nobody who is acctually capable of doing some new beautiful theme, including new metacity theme. Linux will not surpass Windows 7 or Mac OS X anytime soon, no matter what have Shuttleworth said...

I like the current default theme when used with the right wallpaper. Something like this.

With the wallpaper in the screen shot it gives the system the elegance it needs for everything else to look really nice. The current icons and default theme look pretty nice, just the wallpaper and gdm theme were lacking. This is of course only my opinion but I am quite happy with how the system looks in the screen shot.
Edit: The wallpaper in the screen shot is semi transparent and changing the background color will change the color of the wallpaper so it would work with any choice of themes. As far as I know, no one has used a semi transparent wallpaper as a default, this could make for an interesting first.

I agree that there will probably not be a new theme for Lucid. What do you think about the semi transparent wallpaper I posted in the screen shot? I think it makes the current theme work and actually seem elegant.
I hope so. The last three releases were bleh IMHO.
OH and it is orange...not brown.

Well technically it keeps getting a new theme with every KDE release. Hell will be frozen over when Kubuntu gets something like Human.
