What's a toolchain?

I've been using Ubuntu for a couple of years now but haven't really taken much notice of a release until the late alpha or beta stage. Up until a few days ago I'd never even heard of a toolchain. Could someone please explain what it is?

And here I was thinking it is the new repositories being loaded.

Well-without the new tools you can"t have the new toys.....you'll see the first things that were uploaded were the base files & libc6--so the tools are there (mostly)

I had no idea what it was either, so thanks for asking. I too thought it was the new repositories being loaded. I tried one of the jaunty alphas, but it broke and I gave up, but i installed karmic when it was still beta. I'm keen to jump in and extend my linux knowledge with the lucid prereleases, probably when my exams finish on november 9. Looking forward to it

Hi, thanks for the replies. Not long to go before the Lucid toolchain is released, I think. :D

I already have my sources.list set for lucid--generally I run sources from the last & next releases for about the first week or so--that way I get the first backported stuff from the last release whilst I wait for the first new stuff.

Base-files are in: 5.0.0ubuntu8 (lucid) libc6 is in: 2.10.1-3ubuntu1 (lucid) binutils is in: 2.20-1ubuntu3 (lucid) build-essential is in: 11.4 (lucid) deb-helper is in: 7.4.3ubuntu1 (lucid) dkms is in: 2.1.0.1-0ubuntu1 (lucid) dpkg-dev is in: 1.15.4ubuntu2 (lucid) fakeroot is in: 1.12.4ubuntu1 (lucid) gnome-utils is in: 2.28.1-0ubuntu1 (lucid)

So, "most" of what's needed is already there--there are several more that I didn't post--the tools are waiting....................;)
