3D Desktop

You know, in today's world of fast and powerful computers with huge HDD's and upwards of 16 gig RAM that are being made, why hasn't somebody made a 3D desktop? I'm not talking about a 2D desktop with 3D app's on it, I am talking about actual 3D desktops. Enough with the 2D flat background desktop that is so 80'ish. (This is 2009 almost 2010 by the way, lets get on with it already) With every new version coming out let it be LINUX or WINDOWS or whoever, they keep saying its has the latest and greatest, I keep waiting to see a 3D desktop. To no avail, there's not even talk about it or even a hint of it. You know how far ahead that would make that company? That would put them on top of everyone. I seen that some are saying it isn't plausible, or it would take to long or to much work. Don't you think that making a OS is the same amount of work? You would just be using different software for the 3d environment?. In my personal opinion, (take it for what its worth to you) that would make any company stand out from the rest. On another note, most gaming software companies that need software for there needs, they make. Isn't this plausible with making an OS? I am by no means a programmer obviously, just a curious thought about why this hasn't been done yet. :popcorn:

I agree a 3-D desktop would be cool.

But I don't think it would be very efficient or productive. I imagine your concept as walking into a room to listen to music, exit the room, walk down the hall to the 'office' to write a letter, go outside... etc

Yeah, I kind of thought about that too. But I think the neat thing or productive thing would be do something like the GIBSON screenshot on hackers. Yeah, I said it. Heres my idea. Make it along those lines but, there could be several neat factors.

On current desktops, you jump from place to place to do certain things. Its limited to only 2d and your still jumping back and forth either from programs to programs or desktops to desktops. Your just giving it a spruced up millenium look in a limited 3d space.

Back to what it would look like. Lets go back to the gibson screenshot. Now, if you had per say running instances, all computers have them, that would be on one block or tower,a quick glance and your looking at whats going on Office software on another, Internet on one, games on another and so on. They in my mind could put the running program of your choice on the ceiling of the CUBE or what ever your in with a way to back back out to view something else. There not all running just a view of an icon until started unless its a running instance.

The average user of a new computer doesnt even come close to using the power these are capable of, such a waste.They keep making software larger and larger, how about doing something with a look. Lets put it to some use other then picking up adware and spam to slow down everyone.

Besides, a little thought and ingenuity, they could come up with something. How do you think people felt when they went from DOS to WINDOWS. No pun intended. LOL
