Windows 7 and

I was Very Disappointed to see the miss treatment of Windows 7 in Issue 31. I have uses Windows 7 since the Beta was first releases as my primary OS. I was previously using Ubuntu 8.10. I made the switch to Ubuntu because of my disappointment with Windows Vista, and the Linux community has been very welcoming. I have found that windows seven is vastly superior to both Vista and Linux in several ways. the largest complaint I have with Ubuntu or Linux in general is that it requires the ability to tinker to get everything working. My printer is still not directly supported by Ubuntu making getting it to work difficult. Second SAMBA, it is simply not easy to set up when you have a complex mixed network. My household has XP, Vista, OSX, Windows seven and Ubuntu running i never could share data between all three. Now that I am using Windows 7 and don't have the Linux in the mix everything works fine. I am not bashing Ubuntu It has come a long way (yes I have tried 9.10 my webcam doesn't work with it when it did with 8.10 and 9.4) I am just upset that the article on windows 7 was so biased all it did was hit on weak points windows seven has many strong points to. it is super easy to use, more secure than windows has ever been, and super clean to look at. as for the update bloat with XP the reason it has so much update bloat it that it has 8 YEARS OF UPDATES. Ubuntu has a new version every 6 months and that is where most of the updating is done. It was just a really unfair Article.

I am running a laptop as my primary Machine and it is only rebooted about once every 2 weeks(only if an update install or un-install needs to reboot the system. more important to me is recovery time from sleep and Hibernate. and for me there is no difference. Everything I need simply works on windows. With Linux I always seemed to be fixing things. I don't game or code and my school requires docs to be saved in the Word 2007 .xml format. So I tried Ubuntu and used it for over a year (I started with 7.10 which gave me the fewest issues) but I got tired of every six months updating and having to find a way to make my stuff work again. With windows seven even most of my old XP apps have a Vista or 7 compatible versions now. I am running A CORE 2 DUO 2.0 GHz with 4048Mb DDR2 Ram. My laptop is fast but by no means a speed daemon. As for the Price of Windows 7 I don't think $300 is a bad price for a piece of software that I expect to last near 6 years. Free is nice but if a product has value then why not pay for it. Besides you can get it for much cheaper. I have plans to upgrade all of my computers to windows 7 over the next couple months. It will take 8 Copy's of it I got a copy of Ultimate for free for hosting a house Party and 3 free as upgrades for vista machines i have bought 1 through my school for $35 and bought a family 3 pack of home premium for $225. so for just over $250 i will have all of the computers in my home upgraded to Windows seven. As fare as the 'dent' in your HDD 16GB is very minimal these days with 2TB drives costing under $200. Storage costs about $1 for 10GB at that price 16 GB is only $1.60 the cost of a 20 oz soda at an airport. For me to be able to run all my apps without the hassle of wine I'll pay the "windows tax", by no means am I trying to bad mouth Linux or Ubuntu. But until manufactures start supporting Linux, and until Linux develops and easier way to add or upgrade hardware I find the ease of use of Windows 7 to be Superior, And worth the Price.

The statement vastly superior needs some expounding. I have W7 and Karmic both running Karmic is still faster in general and the dent in my HD is 3 Gigs the W7 dent is 16 Gigs and that is with it cleaned of the temporary files. W7 runs slightly slower; completely defragged and cleaned up with several regular not needed services shut off. This is my opinion and my computer so it may be different for others.

Well as most people suggest no matter what OS your using use the one that works for you. It just seems strange that you have to vent on the UF. If it was me I would use what works realizing that is what works for me. Is your comment here do anything but serve you eh.

I wasn't to happy with the stock XP on my netbook running with 2 gigs of ram I didn't go to a windows forum and complain I upgraded to W7 and dual booted Karmic.

With this sort of thread your lucky to have gotten very little responses.

In my opinion there was no mistreatment of Windows 7. The only reason the article was even considered for inclusion in FCM was because the article was well written and fair.

Also, the article is the opinion of ONLY the author, not me, not FCM, nor anyone else.

What article are you talking about.

First of all if you don't like to upgrade every 6 months why don't you use LTS release of Ubuntu? About the office2007 file formats, OpenOffice3.1 that came with Karmic can save files to that format no problems. Reason why i have one WinXP box running is the tasks that can't be done with linux box: Phone Firmware updates, Topfield timer updates, TomTom navigator updates, HP Media server control. If i can get those three task done in linux i will abandon windoze for good rightaway. I have tested Windows 7 and didn't like it at all. Very complex and annoying system to use.

Anyway, enjoy windows. Windows 7 aint so bad, I put it on a partition somewhere, just don't want to boot it and waste it.....

Exactly my point If FCM is going to do an Story on Windows 7 I think it should be a complete and fair Comparison. doing an OP-ED with out a counter point is intellectual dishonest IMHO. and the reason why I am posting this here is this is also the forum for FCM (or at least this is where FCM linked me too) I am by no means looking for a flame war just a open discussion.

The piece is flagged up front as an opinion, the authors opinion, suggesting otherwise is intellectually dishonest. Just because you don't like the content doesn't make it any less valid for the author.

I am curious about this part of the article:

I have done basically the same observation in win 7. Microsoft programs are lightning fast, while other application are slower to start than in Vista or even XP. Has Microsoft really made some kind of "block" for certain applications disguised as a "safety feature"? Does anyone know where I can read more about this "security feature"? Of course I want to trust FCM, but since it is an Ubuntu publication I want to check the sources!

:lolflag: I love ubuntu far better than win7. I'm not denying that win7 is good, but it's so resource hungry IMHO

on a limited resource machine you are right netbook remix is far faster on my daughters Aspire 1 even with 2 GB of ram compared to win7 home premium. she dual boots it and for basic web surfing she uses Ubuntu Remix, but for her school work she still boots to Windows. I am by no means a hater on Ubuntu. I run it as a VM on my computer. But I find that I am using it less and less as I am really loving my windows 7.

For some reasons I'm quite agree wtih axor1337.. Windows 7 is not that bad, in facts it's far more better than Vista and XP, it has a very good support for hardware devices... And like axor1337, sometimes Ubuntu/Linux OS need some tinkering to get something done.. Some of my devices are not working either... I remember when I install ubuntu 8.04 on my acer 4530, I spend a lot of hours to get my atheros wireless card working back then :D But I did not gave up on Ubuntu.. Other than that Ubuntu is far more easier to customize than Windows OS (I tried to make my ubuntu looks like Mac OS X just with a few changes and low on resource, unlike windows os that requires you to install many eye candy application that is resource hungry, app like windows blind, stardock, etc.) But on the other sides I cannot afford to left windows because of some work that I can only be done in windows, like updating my phone firmware, photoshop,etc)
