Anyone from Binghamton?

anyone here in (or around) Binghamton still trying to get the US-NY-Binghamton group going? I'd really like to get involved.

I made this a stickie for a while -- lets try to get some activity in Binghamton!!

No I'm not from Binghamton but I'm a huge Ottawa Senators fan and by default the Binghamton Senators.

Any interest in building a group meetup down in your area?

The steps to getting started are:

(note: "Just Do It" is the theme)

1. Find a location (a location in a 'good part' of town that is considered safe and secure)

• Has Internet connectivity (this is a requirement for most geeks leaving the house)
• Has an area that can be 'reserved' for a meeting
• (optional) has a projector and screen
• (optional) will help promote the group (advertise the meeting to bring 'customers')

1. Schedule some meetings

• Get some 'speakers' lined up that will present interesting topics
• Plan on hosting some 'special' events -- launch parties, bug jams, install fests
• Hold an Ubuntu Hour
• Have some CDs ready to hand out

1. Promote the group to area LUGS (Linux User Groups)
2. Promote the group to area colleges that have CS departments

I haven't been to any of their meetings (yet)

That link came right off of the ny loco's resource page. They are having a Lucid Lynx launch party on may 1st , which might be worth cross promoting on the loco's wiki ?

The Launch Party is actually the LoCo's launch party in Waterloo, NY.

I would be more than happy to offer any assistance I can to the STNYL though... if you talk to them have them get in touch with me.

I'm also in the Binghamton area and would like to get involved...(though the common Tuesday nights aren't good for me due to other activities).

I'm not deadset, on anytime in particular. My only requirement is that it would have to be after 5 on weekdays.

Otherwise I'll make the time to attend.

Since there's so few of us and we have busy schedules maybe we should setup a meeting in IRC, create a channel or something. At first.

Can't believe I didn't see this thread until now, and Ive been wondering for almost 2 years if there were any fellow 'Ubuntu forumers' in the area. I go back and forth between bing. and Ithaca. Often in bing. though.

So, maybe a BUMP for anyone else whose been wondering and hasn't seen this yet? lol

Necromancy here is actually healthy... as we are all trying to find other Ubuntu users in our areas.

The Ithaca Free Software group has a great many Ubuntu users and Cornell has a Free Software group that has a great number of Ubuntu users too.

I work in Ithaca and live in Pitcher...20 miles east of Cortland.

I'm new-ish to the Linux experience. I had to build a web server via command line at work so I've learned a little bit about Linux so I thought I'd give it a go again....tried it a few years back on the Mandrake/Mandriva distro and couldn't get into it.

So far I'm liking it but unfortunately I won't be able to make a full transition to Linux due to the software I use for my business. Maybe I'll give Xandros a try at some point but just wanted to get my feet wet with Ubuntu.

So, uh, there's my life story.
