There is a newer version of dpkg that I've tried and solves, in a way, problem, but is for Lucid. Shod I stay using it on Maverick?

curiously the maverick (6ubuntu4) package seem to be exactly the same published by Colin (same comments change)

I haven't noticed any speed bumps...

the difference is noticeable though on notebook HDD's one running 5200rpm and faster one 7200rpm..

You can try dpkg -1.15.7.1 from Debian/testing. Works fine here though I don't have your speed issue.
