Please help

first i just amazed there is a tamil team in ubuntu:),am from tamilnadu(sorry to use english, i dont have tamil font,and i dont know how to type), my problem is am using pentium III 700mhz,512mb ram, i cant increase my display resolution more than 800x600, my friend said ubuntu will not support such old system:(.i tried many methods given in forums but it doesnt work, pls help me to increase resolution in a complete procedure suitable for my system (monitor:samsung syncmaster 794MG), or suggest me anyother linux which supports my cpu
