I notice that it does work as expected in Firefox.
Do we expect Ubuntu to fix chromium-browser bugs - isn't that Google's responsibility?
your bug is marked as a dup of #664584 , added my me too to yours and confirmed the other .

The Ubuntu devs do some customization to Firefox and Chromium, so I imagine they should at least check the code to see if it's something that inadvertently got broken.
probably ubuntus "tweaking" , searching using the url bar works fine in the real chrome from google , I have both installed .
OT: Time to get active - I want bug #666666. :P
This is a chromium bug. It happens when you use Chromium 7 with an old versions cache etc. The search engines are being removed. It's not just down to ubuntu, it also happens on windows systems.
Your best of downgrading your chromium to a 6.x version.
Lol i'm still using build 55567.
If it is/was an upstream bug, then it's fixed - it works just fine using 8.0.560.0 (63313)
