ran through the ec2 instructions on the rabbitmq site and all seems well.

one exception: i am getting permission denied when i try to set the hostname using the approach on the rabbitmq instructions and also adding alias in the etc/hosts entry with VI.

am trying with sudo of course.

is there something i am missing?

thanks in advance.

Your first stop when thinking about installing an application should be Synaptic, where you would find rabbitmq. Two clicks and it's installed -- and you automatically get updates.
