I've searched all over the place, and found a lot of contradictory information. I even found a ppa for unity that appeared to have an updated compiz and all that good stuff, yet there was no unity plugin that I could find.

Can anyone give a concrete answer as to whether or not it's currently possible to get compiz-unity on Maverick short of building from source?

If so, how?

Hi Veedubb, the answer to your question is here : https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2010-November/032078.html

(and it's "not possible")

Not sure how I got it to work but DON'T try it on a main OS, when I log out it asks if you want ubuntu desktop or netbook desktop. My Maverick was all ready messed up so I gave it a shot, seems to work except no compiz with unity.

Yeah, that's the "old" Unity. :)

Compiz is crashing on me. See this bug report.

Also, if your installing on a VM, you might want to try your own hardware, unless of course you intent to continue using the VM after Natty release. This is one release that the video hardware needs speical attention.

Thank you folks. I had seen that article post, but then I saw another one a day or two later with a link to a ppa, which did include an updated compiz and claimed to include unity. Clearly it was wrong.

I'll probably throw natty on my lappy since I'm not doing much with it at the moment.
