grub-common fails to work - falls down with error

Anyone else having problems with grub-common 1.99-20101124-1ubuntu1 failing to load and falling back to an error message?

I get this occur if I try to boot:

error: symbol not found: 'grub_err_printed_errors'.
grub rescue>_

I can get to the desktop via my USB stick for some reason I can't fathom.

I'm wondering because no-one else seem to have started a thread on what is quite major breakage.

have installed this latest grub and dont have trouble. Are you using removable devices or a foreign language? Seems that grub simply dont find its way: wrong or corrupted uuid in the grub menu, check with:

sudo blkid

note: glance at "strange" symbol in the boot line

The package "grub2" 1.99~20101124-1ubuntu1 works fine with my setups too.

So you can boot the installed Natty selecting "boot first hard disc" from the Live USB menu?

I've not encountered any Natty specific problem yet, but it may be helpful if we could see the output of the Boot Info Script as described here:

Most recently I had a box w/Lucid do that after some repartitioning because the repartitioning changed some partition designations. I managed to straighten it out quickly just by running "update-grub" in a chroot.

Could you also include a brief list of your hardware/computer brand and model?

There are a few hardware specific corner issues.

I have a USB stick in use during the update and what I suspect has happened is that grub2 has updated and put itself on the USB stick instead of the hard disk where it should be. It's weird because even with a USB stick in, this problem has never happened before.

There are a few hardware specific corner issues. I added the results.txt file as a attachment considering how much information was reported.

As for my computer brand and hardware, luckily I have them written out somewhere ready to copy and paste:

  • Intel Core2Quad Q6600 CPU @ 2.4Ghz
  • ASUS P5N-E SLI motherboard
  • 2GB OCZ 800MHz DDR2 PC2-6400 RAM
  • 500GB Seagate SATA HDD
  • Zotac 8800GT Amp! Edition overclocked NVidia graphics card
  • X-Fi sound card (currently not in use)
  • Hauppauge Nova-T 90002 PCI TV card for DVB-T (Freeview)
  • Sony DVD-RW disc drive

It appears to me that you're 100% correct:

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in

partition #1 for (,msdos1)/boot/grub. => [COLOR="Red"]Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for abdc3[/COLOR].

And sdb is clearly a flash drive:

I think I saw something recently in the changelog so give me a bit and I'll see if I can find it. *I also want to check this against Maverick and Lucid changelogs!*

It's always excellent to see early testers locate bugs :)

I'm thinking you may have found a regression due to a recent update.

I'm curious if you do iso-testing? I ask because I've found that bugs reported during iso-testing/upgrade-testing seem to get a fast response.

Please be patient, I may be out for several hours (t-day here and all) :)

As for your question, I don't do iso-testing, I normally just test out the KDE desktop and report bugs as and when they become apparent.

You can boot in manually from that grub prompt without the USB flash

There is no menu.list in the script but this was still in the debconf, did you have another OS with grub-legacy at some point.

As for another OS with grub-legacy, there isn't and hasn't been another OS on this computer, this is just being used to test Kubuntu. The USB stick did have a version of grub installed because I placed a minimal Kubuntu ISO on there using unetbootin (usb-creator-kde would not work due to a bug the last time I used it earlier this month).

EDIT: A reinstall of grub-common managed to restore grub2 on the hard disk. However, doesn't resolve the problem of why grub2 installed onto the USB stick and screwed up grub2 on the hard disk.

kansanoob would have a better answer here, but without knowing what happened, grub sometimes will be pointed at the HD or a external install say to a thumb, you just have to know where the put grub portion is in the install gui and make sure it is where you want it.

Could be some sort of bug but personally I doubt it, I have never had a problem nor seen one that was not a users fault so to speak.

With the manual boot in just run

sudo-update-grub

sudo aptitude safe-upgrade

grub-common and grub-pc were the two packages which got updated and they updated without the need for any user input from me. One minute grub2 is installed on the hard disk, the next minute it's on both the hard disk and the USB stick, but only grub2 on the USB stick works.

Very odd...

You can install grub on the right hard drive using the Live CD/USB. Once you are at the desktop, open a terminal and type:

  • sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt
  • sudo mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys
  • sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
  • sudo mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc
  • sudo chroot /mnt

Substitute your / partition for /dev/sdaX

Once you are in the chroot type:

sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Then once the command has finished type:

sudo update-grub

Ctrl-D out of the chroot and terminal and reboot.

So the safe-upgrade though was from Maverick to Natty correct. If this is the case you should have not had that thumb plugged in, if I'm correct here, you had no time to point grub correctly. You probably did with a command line but personally I just know the key cli I need.

If my hypothesis is somewhat correct we have to remember that your computer is a box of circuits, it needs some direction at times.;)

And even if it was a safe-upgrade in natty for updates, you have to watch out for stuff. Never know though could be a grub bug, but kansasnoob is as advanced as they are looking for these bugs so may easily like all of us use confirmation bias at first before confirming. Sorry kansanoob you know I respect your work but these sort of bias plague us all.;)

I decided to try and reproduce this behavior with a couple of differences: I'm using Ubuntu instead of Kubuntu, and my Live USB was created using Startup Disc Creator.

It was really easy because there was another grub2 update waiting for me this AM, but before applying the updates I ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc" with the flash drive plugged in just to check the starting point:

Then I checked with the Boot Info Script:

=> Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in

partition #16 for (,msdos16)/boot/grub. => No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdb => Syslinux is installed in the MBR of /dev/sdc

Anyway I completed that update without a problem. I double checked with both 'dpkg-reconfigure' and by running the Boot Info Script again, and it worked fine.

But I downloaded the pertinent parts of the changelog:
