Hi, At the moment I use LimuxMint 9, but I have used Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 as well and had the same issue. I only have a bottom panel, no upper one, to extend the size of the monitor. It's a 1920x1080 wide-screen monitor and I can use all the height I have. To increase this height any further I select to auto-hide the panel. But a lot of times it does not do that. I then have to click the panel to make it disappear. When I start a program through the menu for example the panel stays visible. When I start a program from the panel it will disappear. Is there something I can do about this small, but annoying, problem? I mean I want the panel to auto-hide, I select the correct setting for that, and then it doesn't do it all the time. That's annoying, right?

Bump. A Big Bump. Am I again the only one who has this trouble? I must be a very unique person, I had no idea. Come on guys help me with this please.
I'm using Mint 9 too on a Dell laptop. It came with just a lower panel, which I moved to the top 'cos I prefer it at eye-level. Set to auto-hide and it does ....
Perhaps someone on the linux mint forums could help since they use a different desktop environment.

True, but as you can see in my original post I had the same with Ubuntu Hardy and Jaunty. Plus, the Mint forum is not that active as the Ubuntu forum, so I like to come here.
@Megaptera: I tried it at the top and I still have the same problem: the panel does not always hide.

Does it only hide when another app is over it and not hide when you can see the desktop? If so I think that might be normal behaviour. I use AWN (Avast-window-navigator) instead of the default gnome panel, and that is it's normal behavour when setting is "Intellihide".

Thank you for answering. As I wrote in my first post, when I start a program using the menu the panel does not hide, when I start the (same) program from the panel it does hide. I can't notice any difference between showing desktop or another program.
I have an issue like this. At times the gnome panel will not stay hidden, and I have to mouse over it to "rehide". I am thinking this is an upstream issue.
