Why does Windows download the update, and then only give you to option to pospone the installation up to 4 hours. There's no option to stop the update all together?
Anyway, I was in the middle of web designing, as - unfortunately, there's no application for Linux as good as Dreamweaver (that I've seen). And bam, I didn't notice the notification and it shut my PC down.
Microsoft is the biggest cause of data loss for me, why can't you cancel updates!?
Turn off automatic updates. Just be sure to run them when you have a few minutes. That is how I do them, as I only boot Windows once or twice a week and between Java, Adobe and Windows Updates, one of them wants a restart.

You can turn them off. It's in the control panel.
OT: Why are you using a WYSIWYG editor for web design?
And have you tried Kompozer, or running Dreamweaver in Wine?
The thing that bothers me the most is failed Windows Updates. I can't remember when the last time was that I had a failed update in Mac OS or Ubuntu.

Nor I a Windows update, to be honest.
OP: You can configure Windows 7 to simply not request a restart, but still configure updates in the background; it's a local policy setting, I believe.
I'm fairly certain that the desktop focus switches to the update notification when this happens. I distinctly remember being knocked out of full screen games b/c of the update notification. As such, I find it hard to believe that someone could miss the notification.

Yes, that's what it's supposed to do. I got brutally teabagged in a game of BC2 because of the same problem (hence looking into the policy).
