I'm not a hacker and therefore am of no use in solving this problem or even understanding the practicality of the solution. But if I could surf through the Dash, find a file and hit space(or something) and view a preview of the file/folder while still within the Dash, Ubuntu would be not only amazing but highly efficient from a user's perspective. What do you think? Is it possible?

You could have a point there but it doesn’t even have to be done completely in the dash.
You do get a preview of some types of file such as PDFs in the standard folder management system but it would be good if it was more like Mac where if I installed OOo I could get a preview of those documents too along with almost any type of file.
I also vote for that as a good improvement, better preview support for files.
