Oneiric Pre Installed Software

I'd like to see the next version of ubuntu shipped with better, and fewer programs. Gedit or a similar application in place of the standard "text editor". foxit instead of "document viewer", included aac and mp3 codecs,vlc instead of regular "movie player" and so on. I couldn't personally pick each application, but id like to see the choices paired down and the quality improved so that you need to install less to begin with. The other thing i want is a simplified, "maximized" copy of ubuntu with only the software installed that is required for the ubuntu desktop environment to run as its supposed to. Particularly replace compiz and nautilus with the fastest window manager and file manager out there, as well as all of the extras, like splash, bluetooth, printer settings, and scanner settings disabled that arent crucial to the ubuntu desktops GUI, and all of the options, such as "concurrency = shell" enabled that improve system speed. Also, i heard something about moving the log in screen to a command line interface to increase boot speed, that should be enabled by default. This way, theres an ultra small, ultra fast copy of ubuntu that can easily be distributed among a large number of computer, can be started up EXTREMELY fast, and can limit activity, such as would be needed in a business or educational environment.

"Movie Player" is totem, and I think its a better default than VLC because its less resource intensive. Plus there are legal issues to distributing VLC because of all the codecs. Plus VLC has a tendency to skip or not play right if its not setup right for the system.

Ubuntu is a gnome based distribution, we get the gnome defaults. If you want different default programs, lobby gnome to get them changed.

there are many alternatives for the default programs in the repos and many more if you are willing to do a little work adjusting them to run on ubuntu , no one set of defaults will satisfy everyone so feel free to "salt to taste"

I get that, and ive done it myself, but couldnt ubuntu work through this list, and change the defaults? It doesnt sound hard to me...

Yes of course, but in case of VLC it could very well be default (a bit modified in case of some codecs). It is qt-based, but so is Unity2D (the default fallback for Unity3D in Oneiric).

In addition to Totem, also Evolution, Rhythmbox (not any more default), Empathy are gnome-based which could be dropped.

I think the checkbox during install is a nice compromise for the mp3 codecs, etc. and as mentioned previously, there are legal issues including VLC.

As for your other idea, with the drastic changes you're suggesting, perhaps you should just look to another distro instead? Or at least take a look at Lubuntu.

Which is why we have Unity instead of Gnome-Shell, Firefox instead of Epiphany, Banshee instead of Rhythmbox, Pidgin instead of Empathy, and Libre Office instead of AbiWord, right? ;)

Well these drastic changes would be provided in an ultra-light copy of ubuntu, like a "netbook edition".

I would like to see a stripped down version available.Or even better give us choices about what default programs it installs

VLC legal issues? What legal issues?

Or are you confused by the fact that the Windows versions is made available as one blob that includes the program and the codecs?
