Hidden scroll bar, bad for the visually impaired.

It is impossible to locate the little tab to open the hidden scroll bar in a long document for a person with any visual impairment.

Actually I'm not visually impaired but I still find it tricky to use.

I usually scroll large lists by hovering the mouse over the up or down arrows at the edges of th scroll bar. Now if I find a large list which doesn't support keyboard scrolling (i.e. transmission) it's almost impossible to scroll without shooting past the next page.

I believe it will be optional in the next release. I think there might already be a package for this. Not sure where it is. Try a search.

If you click the arrows on the pop-up slider, you can scroll one page at a time.

I quite like the idea in theory but looking at the scrollbar that pops up it still has and up and down arrow on it. Can't those be made to function as they did on the old style bar? Best of both worlds.

And yes I agree, a feature like this needs to be switchable for those who struggle to see it.

Yep, it's the only UI change in Ubuntu that I just couldn't adjust to because it feels so sloppy. I gave them a try as soon as they were available, but shortly after (gave it a day or so) gave up.

However, I think this would be great for a tablet.

I love the new scroll bars! But as you said its hard for the visually impaired. I think they should put the old scroll bars in the accessibility package.

I played around with Unity in VB, and I have to say those scroll bars are kind of ugly. I didn't have any problems using them, but then I have good eyesight. A little too good in this case.

They probably could make it like that, I reckon. I normally use the scroll wheel (or edge scrolling on my touchpad). That's probably why I like it; I never use the bar for scrolling.

You'd think so, but I actually like it on my other computer better. It can be difficult at times to poke in exactly the right spot with your finger.

I think having the thumb split into four to allow for both page and scroll would make the hot zones too small and paging is more useful than scrolling, to me. I could see having a key combination that would allow switching the function between paging and scrolling.

For the sight impaired I would probably suggest flashing the thumb if the mouse cursor crosses over the edge of the window pane where the scrollbar resides but outside of the area the would cause the thumb to pop up long enough to click or drag it.

If length/width can be used to determine the size of the indicator area within the scroll area, it seems like it should be able to be used to determine if a small drag should result in scrolling at a sane/manageable pace within a large document while still allowing a longer drag to move to a relative position, or always move to a relative position for shorter documents.

I always lose the scroll bar when its the white bar on top of the gray scroll track. Maybe just a bit brighter bar and a bit darker track.
