Oneiric brings a bunch of new packages: last week, while updating, i've seen at least more than 1200 new ones, for a total now listed nearly 34000, thats awesome (maybe its time to remove the unmainted ones too, but it seems nobody works on that :()

About the perl packages, list of broken dependencies grows also, get 25 packages waiting in the queue to be upgraded.

Same here.

Those perl packages are rebuilt for perl 5.12 which depends on libdb5.1. Python3.2 depends on libdb5.1.

I hope he work on Launchpad too :)

On my system libdb5.1 shows as being installed and up to date, the default python as 2.7.1, so no reason to install python3.2 (for me), but if I do select python3.2 for installation, it doesn't show a conflict.

Don't know what you are seeing, but it seems not to have anything to do with libdb5.1.

If you are trying to install something else that depends on python3.2, that might also be depending on some perl package that can't be installed until the transition affecting the perl packages is complete, or at least more complete. There often seem to be stragglers that don't get updated to the newer stuff right a way.

Seeker, I said python3.2 depends on libdb5.1, not the other way round. Libdb5.1 does not depend on python3.2, it does not need python packages.

What you should notice, however, is that python 2.7 only depends on libdb4.8. And of course libdb4.8 does not depend on python2.7 nor python3.2.

This is just to pay your attention to the fact porting python3.2 into Oneiric has began.

For the sake of discussion, I haven't been able to install Pidgin in OO.

I get this error:

 Recommends: pidgin-libnotify but it is not going to be installed

I'm running Perl 5.12.3-6ubuntu4...

all the previous perl packages waiting in queue have been installed smootly now on my end (purged libgtk2-gladexml-perl first then the newest is automaticaly installed)

So in other words you were confusing the issue the thread is about (perl packages not loading) by posting random urelated stuff not in response to anything else that was posted and that should have been in a thread of it's own, and the fact that both depend on libdb5.1 was not intended to be represented as a commonality between one set of packages you couldn't load and another set you couldn't load? :P

I never said anything one way or the other about anything libdb5.1 may or may not depend on, it seemed as though you were having a problem of some kind so since the post was vague I posted in a general way.

How do you know my intensions on this thread? You know I made this thread, I know what it is about. The topic is Colin Watson being very active on perl packages!

For the sake of discussion, I haven't been able to install Pidgin in OO.

I get this error:

In the middle of a thread with the title "Some perl packages" that has by that time become more about the status of perl packages and inability to install some things because of that status is bound to lead people to think that maybe there is some issue with Python3.2 with libdb5.1 being a common dependency maybe it is the culprit.

It may not have started being a thread about problems installing/updating packages, but that's what it had become at the point where you posted python3.2 and libdb5.1.

In that context, I thought you were indicating you had some kind of problem installing one or both of those.

Since that doesn't seem to be the case, the response was to point out that in that context the post was confusing, and I didn't appear to be the only one that was confused by it.

I'm still running a patched & mod'ed alpha install. It wouldn't hurt me to do a fresh Natty install, then upgrade. ;)

I have forced an installation and all is working fine. Looks this is really just a bad dependency entry. The installation can be forced with:

apt-get download libpurple0 pidgin && sudo dpkg --force-all -i libpurple0*.deb pidgin*.deb

Then open /var/lib/dpkg/status and search for the packages libpurple0 and pidgin. Just remove at the dependency line perlapi-5.10.1.

Forced upgrade. Changed /var/lib/dpkg/status (with BU first, this is a tricky file that is hard to re-generate, with many BU in many places). Result:``` :~$ sudo apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages have been kept back: libpurple0 pidgin 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 2 not upgraded.

Heh! That's a V nasty file to play with. Guaranteed breakage...

edit the DEBIAN/control files to have the right perl version

go back to the place where both folders are

sudo dpkg-deb --build libpurple0_2.7.11-1ubuntu2_amd64

sudo dpkg -i libpurple0_2.7.11-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb

(same for pidgin)

no more package cache errors, and you have a working pidgin

I did let the perl packages remove pidgin and then replaced libperl5.10 by libperl5.12 on libpurple0 control file and removed the perlapi-5.10.1 dependency on both control files (pidgin and libpurple0). Working fine for now. :)
