Just out of curiosity does anyone else get corruption of the top panel when adjusting anything cosmetic in compiz? if so does anyone know if a fix for this is in the works?

Compiz is very brittle, right now, and easily broken.
There are certain things that you can change, but...

This much you can't fail to miss. I decided to show off the cube to someone a while back. BIG MISTAKE. After 30 minutes of compiz conflicts I impressed a friend very much. 30 minutes of further conflicts later I didn't quite have unity back. Today I finally worked out the scale was turned off (I'd been to lazy to investigate I admit) and whilst browsing compiz touched something which turned my top panel totally white. It still works I just can't see what I'm clicking on!

Ah yes. The cube. I decided I could live without it after reading other threads where people had tried to enable it in Natty. :| This link below is for Natty, so I don't know whether it will work in the current state of play with Oneiric, but fwiw:

Oh I got it working fine. Disable enough plugins and you end up having to log into classic session and it's a bit of a nightmare coaxing unity back to life when you're done.
So how do you change the number of desktops now we no longer have the bottom panel?

Sure there's a fix. Update Synaptic and install Unity 2D.
Does not use Compiz. Note, even on full screen applications, Compiz is still chewing up processor cycles when it should not be doing anything.

I've got enough problems with one :-) Heh! You can drag n' drop windows, from one workspace to another in Unity, so the Wall is faster / easier / better than the Cube, IMO.

I've got a top / bottom panel. Gnome2 Switcher works for all 9 Compiz workspaces.

As I'm typing my top panel has left me, I'll I did was in-able a few plugins and gone.... Of souse its back when I login again

That's not a fix, that's brushing the problem under the carpet. Although I think I'd be advising the 2D option to most people with anything but top end hardware.
even if you have highend hardware, compiz is still unstable. since i upgraded to 11.04 i've got:
- a complete system freeze while idling (in fact, this is the first complete freeze since i've installed linux on this machine - which was when the q6600 came out)
- a lost unity session from a user. (i'm using fast-user-switching. wanted to continue my running session but the display just returned to gdm, after that all running programs where gone)
- graphic corruption on the top and side panel of unity. this usually resolves itself after some seconds, or switching desktops.
- whole desktop sometimes lags as hell, especially when moving windows around.
and don't tell me a q6600 and GeForce 8600 GT graphics card are not fast enough to handle a simple gui, because they should be.

Surely that defeats the point of the 2D environment. It's not broken so don't try to fix it!

I agree entirely. I was thinking simply about speed. And the assumption that these issues will eventually be resolved.
