The Grub2 is now a bit nearer to the final release version 2.0. A new 1.99 version has now been released.

Thanks for that. I do not know what 11.10 is using but I am using rc13 and it is really nice.
I will wait for it to hit one of my repos. Sid ought to get it pretty quickly so the 11.10 repo should too.
Grub Legacy never reached 1.0 "stable".
I wonder if grub 1.99 will give rise to grub 1.99.1, grub 1.99.2, etc.

Debian has a, roughly, 3 year, dev cycle. They do let it slip if it is not ready.
If they did not have the stability policy that they have you would have a hard time running Ubuntu releases considering that they are based on Debian Sid (unstable).
IMO that's just confusing. How would a user with a problem know if he's running GRUB or GRUB 2? "GRUB 1.99" definitely doesn't help. I'd rather prefer updates to to GRUB 2.0 than never reaching the 2.0 state...
Funny. I did a hard reset after Synaptic got corrupted removing a broken package and Ubuntu wouldn't boot. When I ran the GRUB recovery console, it fixed a bunch of errors and it booted up again. I think GRUB 2 has a rather good tolerance for the occasional error.
Everything's smooth as silk now.
