Ubuntu's ISOs have to be burned into a CD or DVD so the opertive system s loaded from there.
I've been experimenting with minimal systems such as monowall, slitaz, etc. and notice that man of them distribute isos that can be simply dumped into a storage device using dd and later booted from that device. Is there any reason for ubuntu not suporting such installation method?
New CD's are hybrid. Starting now, so not the older ones. Or Oneiric or later.

But I still prefer to have more than one ISO on a Flash drive since flash drives are now larger.
