I borked UbuOO 3 days ago - by installing xserver-xephyr - and nothing in my bag o' tricks would resurrect it.
Okay, we're off to the races...
I got to check out this gnome-xephyr :)
I wonder if GNOME 3 will be ready for PP.

I meant to type xserver-xephyr, but my fingers weren't connected to the brain yet.
xserver-xephyr (basically) allows you to run xserver inside xserver.
It's a great trick, and saves a lot of time, when it works, but it totally messed up my UbuOO install - and I mean TOTALLY!!!
I don't suggest trying it on any system running Gnome 3. C++ installs are still working fine...
It WILL grenade your G3 install(s) though! ;)
Thanks for the heads up VinDSL. I will then refrain from installing that program. I hope I am not being off topic here but GNOME Shell will just not come up without those multiple icons. Unity however is working great as is Cario so I'm not worried about that. Of course I am just wondering how they will weave GNOME Shell into PP. I know that Gnome Shell works great in Fedora - but looks like some big probs still.
Another thing while I am at it here. I have a few clients that I have more or less sold on the Ubuntu concept, especially educators and I have successfully tested Edubuntu 11.04 which is really terrific! However, when I tried to breach the the new release (Precise Pangolin) it appeared that people are not laughing - but rather give me sort of twisted, off-centered smirk - and I'll be honest .. I get tounge tied ! :) I can't look newbies in the face when I mention the PP word.
So .. thanks again Vin .. I'm just venting. Thats why they call me Ventrical :)

Seamless install of Ocelot.. now ready for Pinecone (Precise)Pangolin! ) Bravo! Same here - took me a couple tries, but I've got Oneiric running and it's doing fine. Seems like they've made a few improvements, and I definitely like that Tbird is the standard client, since it neatly integrates with the "mail" drop down bar on the top right side of the screen. For some reason, I was never able to accomplish that when I had to download Tbird.
Bring on Precise Pangolin! -M
Ps. I also want to thank the Ubuntu developers for acquainting me with all these obscure animals. I would never have known what a Narwhal or a Pangolin were without them.

Heh! My "fresh" install is the polar opposite. :D
I'm using GS right now, because Unity 3D isn't working (for me).
Everything is still messed up (themes, fonts, et cetera), so I guess I'll start disabling my old config files, one-at-a-time.

I'll try installing Gnome shell on my fresh install and see what happens.
Ok.. GNOME 3 Shell is working great on the fresh install. (todays CD release).
I guess the older install was borked up or somthing. I loaded the (precise) sources list on that install.
Well my first try was a shambles! It stopped while trying to remove previously installed incompatible file systems. There weren't any! It was a brand new freshly formatted partition! 25 minutes later I had to shutdown. I couldn't cancel the installation, Ubiquity refused to be killed via system monitor or cli. Not a great start :-(
The second attempt went better, but then took 30 minutes to download the Nvidia driver! Me thinks the wireless network is slooooooooooooow (or I'm being choked by my ISP).
I'll have to investigate further.
I daren't even think of installing ubuntu-restricted-extras yet - it'll take a week!

I downloaded nvidia-current at 56K... on a 7GB ADSL2 connection.
I have a *feeling* the servers are a bit stressed, right now.
That's a fair point. I'll try downloading something from somewhere else and test my system (and the ISP).

I just checked my bandwidth meter, and it tests out @ 3.39 Mbps (which is normal).

Yep..right around 6:30pm EST my DSL went dog slow. so I can confirm 'stressedout" servers - no doubt!

Wow, thank for the link, I got 10.63 Mbps on mine. My OO install was a lot of work. I had to remove all the installed graphics drivers from a terminal only boot, then install the latest nVidia drives and presto, desktop. I almost ditched this version due to the problem.
Glad I didn't, it's working "OK" but there are some libraries missing that prevents the install of some applications. I had to google them and download from the web, install the manually and now my other packages install just fine.
I think I'll wait a bit, on Pangolin...

Ppl in the Northeast really connect well to that server, especially if they're running Verizon FiOS.
I'm in dusty Arizona, and have to go through a lot of routers, thus the lower speeds (for me).

I just installed Oneiric twice on my netbook, once to use in case something goes wrong with Precise, and the second time as a base for Precise. Both times the mouse froze after the usb wireless device I need to install the Broadcom drivers connected to my router. Otherwise the install process was just as boring as usual, everything else worked as it should.

Well, my install is 90% there...
I never could figure out how to import a .profile into Compiz - had to rebuild it manually.
And, Synaptic is janky. It won't let me use the gui to add repos. I have to do that from CLI.
Anyway, Unity is starting to shape up - best it's looked in 3-4 days, plus GS is up n' running now... ;)
I installed on a new partition seemlessly.
The big glitches are: General freeze of unity for no particular reasons. Skype not launching from launcher (but works when launched from command line) Skype icon not showing on top right panel but then shows up way later for no particular reasons.

I just noticed, a public key was missing, on my install.
sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com F0C484CC9BF2D8AB... fixed it.
All I'm missing are the UbuPP extras, in the repos now.
Still have to tweak the repos manually... gui doesn't work.

I just noticed that on this Oneiric install on my Acer Extensa that the wireless mouse is really sticky.

I video capped my install. It was a little longer than usual - tedoius - yes... but I like watching the process. Installs are like Steinway Pianos, no two are the same. :)

My problem was only when using a usb wireless device, as soon as the proper driver was installed and the usb device removed, things work the way they should.

There is, at least in the Debian repo, netselect-apt. I can't find it in the PP repo. Has Ubuntu not included it? It is a CLI way to find a mirror and put it in the sources.list.

Synaptic was... let's say crashing (for want of a different word).
Every time I tried to select the repo panel in Synaptic, nothing would appear, followed immediately by a dialog saying the repos had changed; make sure to refresh, blah, blah, blah.
Also, Software Sources, in the System Settings panel did nothing.
Anyway, I fixed both problems, a couple of minutes ago.

I've seen what we are seeing with synaptic in several of the previous development releases. I've haven't checked the post that VinDSL linked to, but I should record he solution somewhere for the next time it happens.
Yep, it's from a bug report/fix from maverick times. A recurrence it seems. Thanks to arpanaut and his good memory ;) :-)
I was back on my Debian when I read this thread and reported the same trouble. Went looking for alternatives and found one that works quite nicely.
Am on Xubuntu 12.04-testing right now and go looking for netselect-apt. it is not in the repo.
Why is this tool not available in the Ubuntu repo or does it have some other name?
It looks like netselect-apt was only available in hardy.
