We seriously need a new icon theme...

What happened to the new icon theme promised for 11.10? Ubuntu's icons are starting to look very dated and we really need a fresh take.

Yeah, they have only seen small changes over time, but do they look outdated? I for one like them. What I don't like are those ugly upscaled icons in the dash, the launcher, and the alt-tab switcher.

The default icons are the only thing I don't much care for. lol The folder icons are 'ok'... but the application icons, i can't stand!

I pretty much love everything ubuntu has by default.. except the icons. :P

But good god........ Please do not change them to "faenza" . Id rather have the defaults than that faenza rubbish!

Bummer, i like them. when using a good icon set anyway. lol

If you don't like the Unity icons, just build your own... :)

The Thunderbird icons in 11.10 are magnificent!

I hope Firefox and Gedit and other apps gains monochrome icons similar to Thunderbird's for 12.04.

I have been asking Otto Greenslade (Canonical visual design lead) during the Oneiric cycle about the new icon theme - here is what he had to say back then > I'm not making any promises for Oneiric. We're tackling the icon project from the ground up and the results will not disappoint. Also there was a job offer from the design team looking for someone with experience in designing icon themes back in spring. So I think a new or at least updated icon theme will come - but god knows when. Maybe it will already be announced at hte UDS ? (crosses fingers)

I agree.. New stylish icons will definitely give the system a new feel..

I agree that we need a better icon theme. The colours and general ideas are great, but it looks too simple and "cutesy" when compared with Windows 7 or OS X.

Yeah, the orange navigation icons look a little silly on the black toolbar. But I've noticed monochrome icons don't work so well with the current ambiance theme, here's an example.

The icon theme now has whitish monochrome icons so it looks better on the dark panel, but the default web browser, firefox, only has a dark tab bar. The nav buttons end up being white on white. This also happens in various other places in the ambiance theme because its such a mix of dark and light. Try using a monochrome icon theme like faenza to see for yourself.

Some theme changes would probably need to be made to accommodate a more monochrome theme, or the icon theme would have to be very specifically tailored to the ambiance theme.
