Why do we still not have this? I thought this had landed at some point during the beta, and gnome-shell 3.2 currently has this. I recall in the 11.10 beta forums I asked about this and someone showed me a screenshot of ambiance with nice smooth borders.
The ugly, jagged edges really ruin the polished look and feel ubuntu is going for.

Its coming for pangolin, there were regressions in compiz too late in the dev cycle to be able to include it.

AFAIK it was decided this won't be introduced in Ubuntu 12.04. It was planned feature yes but AFAIK it was decided it will be available in next release and not in Ubuntu 12.04. Probably there are still some issues needed to be taken care of before this will be available to the users in stable Ubuntu releases!
