New idea for Xubuntu 12.04

Canonical and the developers need to rapidly alter the theme for the next Xubuntu release. Since XFCE is so similar to GNOME 2.x, I would recommend basing Xubuntu 12.04 off the "classic" Ubuntu we see in 11.04 while in "Ubuntu Classic" and releases earlier.

As we all know, many people do not want to change to Unity, and find it very buggy. XFCE on Xubuntu offers the stability and feel of GNOME 2.x and the "classic" Ubuntu, which most people who know Ubuntu know best. Also, Xubuntu is currently, well... crappy! There are only basic utilities and themes, and there is pretty much no support by the community whatsoever. Xubuntu 12.04 needs to be the rebirth of the Xubuntu OS, bringing the classic features and looks we all know and love, while bringing the quality of Ubuntu to another playground.

do you know about Xfce4-goodies? That might add some stuff. Xfce is intended to be lightweight, not loaded down with gadgets. Perhaps the -goodies package would add some gadgetry back. I'm not holding my breath waiting for Unity to go away, I think I'd turn very blue indeed.

But Xubuntu is being quickly outdated by Lubuntu. It is almost pointless to use Xubuntu instead of Lubuntu.

I switched to xubuntu myself as I don't like unity or shell. I installed ubuntu light themes, feanza icons, my preferred apps and customised a few other things (ubuntu font was already installed) so now it looks much like my old pre-unity ubuntu, but it's a lot faster. :)

Using "old" gnome parts instead of xfce parts would probably make xubuntu a lot less lightweight and it wouldn't be Xubuntu (but some gnome-xfce-ubuntu GXubuntu) :neutral:

Xubuntu is maintained by a completely different team, that isn't employed by Canonical. You can help them out by going here.

With all due respect, I disagree. I say let the xubuntu team continue to do their amazing work in providing a high-quality implementation of the xfce DE. With the plans for xfce 4.10 now released (see: http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=5758), I'm eagerly awaiting to see these changes and how the xubuntu team will integrate this into the new versions.

IMO, Xubuntu (xfce) offers the perfect mix of a graphical environment that does not get in the way but still allows you to be functional. Ultimately, it boils down to preference and choice. One person's "crappy" is another person's "perfectly functional". Be careful making sweeping statements such as this - you may find that not everyone agrees with your opinion.

Xubuntu has all of the base utilities that the other *buntus have, although not as many gui-based ones. It doesn't "hand hold" as much as the others. Also, there are plenty of themes available (see: http://xfce-look.org/), but again this boils down to choice. I'm quite happy with the default greybird theme - it fits perfectly with the design intentions of the DE.

Huh?!?!?!? Really? Have a look at the Xubuntu section here in ubuntuforums and over at the XFCE forums (http://forum.xfce.org/index.php). You'll find some very knowledgeable and helpful folks in both places :)

Xubuntu 12.04 needs to continue in its tradition of providing a quality xfce implementation on the ubuntu base. My two cents.

My only complaint about Xfce is this bug:

Bug 7367 – With many open windows, buttons move beyond end of window buttons list

And it's a trivial cosmetic problem. :D

Having switched to Xfce for all my computers save one (a 11.04 classic remains at work), I can say I like it very well. Not exactly Gnome 2, but that is OK.

Also, I find Xubuntu to be the best looking of all the -buntus right now. I like the greybird theme. I hope Xubuntu 12.04 is as great as the recent incarnations have been!

I love Xubuntu! I keep trying new versions of Ubuntu when they come out and going back to X. It will run all the programs Ubuntu will only faster. Besides I like the blue and grey look.

I think Xubuntu is MUCH better looking than Lubuntu. It has clean and sophisticated lines and is just easy on the eyes.

There is already an option to have global menu in Xubuntu (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/10/how-to-enable-ubuntus-global-menu-in-xubuntu-11-10/)

I am sooooo happy that Xubuntu developers keep on bringing the stability, effectiveness and beauty to the desktop. No rebirth needed!

I am QUITE happy to have Xubuntu on my test platform for a change. 2 standard installs and 2 netboot installs.

I think the netboot installs are perhaps a bit better as they are more like the Xfce4.8 release than the standard Xubuntu install but have not not made up my mind completely. Both have their points.

Having not fooled with Xfce anywhere since 3.something Xfce4 particularly 4.8 is a wonderful DE. Good looking, simple to configure, appears to have unlimited panel numbers available if that blows your skirt up, stackable launchers (drawers) so that you don't need many, easy to mix and match themes and icon themes, compositing optional. Pretty slick.

Funny, but I'm already using a side-launcher in Xfce. I just moved my panel to the left, made it vertical and I haven't looked back since. :D

I have mine on the top.

Tried the one on the bottom (Xfce4 default "dock"). Didn't like it there. Tried it on the left (right side is out of the question for me). Not really bad, not really good. Have it all on the top right now.

I would put 2 on top if I could find a way to get the windows to respect both panels as an edge.

One does the job fine. Two is nice for some things and they hide very nicely.

You can put 2 panels on top and just use slightly different colors I do that for a big 19" screen I have. I too believe xubuntu could benefit from all the unity and gnome shell escapees. But is it based on gnome 2 also? If so it will go that way soon too. I googled but couldn't find what shell it's based on.This looks ominous though from xfce wikipedia "It is based on the GTK+ 2 toolkit (the same as GNOME). It uses the Xfwm window manager, described below. Its configuration is entirely mouse-driven, and the configuration files are hidden from the casual user."

Xfce was initialled based on Xforms but was rewritten to take advantage of the GTK+2 toolkit. It's not really "based" on Gnome 2 as much as they both used the GTK toolkit (hence the similarity in appearance and to some extent, functionality). Xfce is planning to migrate to the new GTK+3 framework after the next (4.10) release. See: http://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.10/roadmap

A release or two ago, I would have agreed with you. But Lubuntu has had a bit of a design redesign :lol: and it actually looks really good now.

If Xubuntu started out without the default dock at the bottom, IMO it would be a lot better. I didn't even notice it until the second time I installed. It looks rubbish too. Also if you're into docks, you probably customise anyway, so just add it if you want it.

LOVE the idea of Thunar finally managing the desktop and showing network locations in the upcoming 4.10.

This was the most perplexing part of moving to Xubuntu a few releases ago.

Keep it small, fast, easy and consistent. Let the user build what they like on top of it.

Perhaps the xfce4-goodies tools should be offered optionally during installation of a new Xubuntu box? Many new users seem lost without them.

EDIT: Just saw that Xfce 4.10 is scheduled for 2012-03-11, that's probably too late for Xubuntu 12.04 LTS which will be in late beta. Sad :(

@LewisTM, Thunar can already access network locations through the "Network" bookmark on the side panel. Are you talking about something else?

Yes, I'm talking about showing connected network locations on the tree view so we can browse them. I'm also talking about supporting bookmarked network locations. Thunar is only halfway there.

I might have to try xubuntu again now. I do have an install of saline the PSE server edition but it still has the xfce desktop and occasionally-actually more frequently I've been using that.

I think in general that xfce has grown while still keeping it's clean simple appearance. Unity on the other hand and IMO appears to be trying to copy some popular interface(s) and failing at that.

Xubuntu 11.10 is much better than the amateurish Lubuntu. We have switched all our machines to Xubuntu. See http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=207476&d=1321613825. Looking forward to see the new Xubuntu 12.04 LTS. Will it be LTS?

I moved to Xububtu from Ubuntu 11.10 and never looked back! I did download a lot of software that I needed, but I do not feel that I am missing anything. I did put AWN dock. This desktop rocks. I love it and would not change a thing. Xubuntu is beautiful!

Xubuntu offers the most stylish OS compared to the rest of the desktop environment kitsch.

Does anyone read the title of the threads they post in? How many of the people posting in this thread are running Xubuntu 12.04. we are here to test the next version of Xubuntu, if you aren't running it, there isn't a need to post in this thread.
