Ubuntu might drop nautilus for marlin

marlin is the successor of nautilus-elementary and is being improved.

They wont drop nautilus now (in this cycle), but they might in the future if marlin offers a better experience (which imo even thunar is...).

yea thanks, the source link also refers to the uds sessions they had been discussing it.

i just attended remotely (unfortunately), but am still pretty beat. This one was a very busy one and am very happy at all the progress that is going to come out of it.

That's funny, I thought Ubuntu was already using nautilus-elementary. I guess it's not, having just looked. I can't see that adopting Marlin would be such a big step, as it's still just nautilus-elementary?

um, ubuntu has never used nautilus-e as default.

That would be great news ! Nautils seens like stopped in time for ages. It actually looks worse in 11.10. Marlin is beautiful and fast.

Marlin first needs to make a stable release and then get the stable release into the Ubuntu archives for it to be tested and then it can be proposed as a substitute for Nautilus. That is unlikely to happen this release.

I've not used Marlin (as it isn't in the normal repositories) but it would also need to support the hack to show select menus on a blank desktop. Or maybe Unity could be hacked to do that, but the bigger point is to make sure that all of the typical functionality is still there.

I know now, but I think when I saw Nautilus initially in 11.10 I thought it was Nautilus Elementary because it had fewer buttons than in 11.04 :-)

Changing to Marlin shouldn't be that difficult, I imagine. Changing default file manager is fairly easy, and there shouldn't be much missing functionality because it's descended from the same codebase as normal Nautilus anyway.

I believe Marlin is a complete rewrite and isn't really a Nautilus descendant. A file manager is a rather important piece of an OS and will need thorough testing before the default file manager is swapped.
