Just did an update, and noticed GIMP was upgraded to 2.8.0

Am I seeing things? Can this be true?

I was crushed when GIMP 2.7.5 disappeared, after I downloaded the 12.10 toolchain!

I'm gonna go splash some water on my face, and pinch myself. LoL! :D

Er... I might have a problem, here. :lolflag: RE: What do you want to see added or improved for Quantal Quetzal?

Man, this is the great news!

Single-window mode is the best invention since water.

I felt like I'd lost a limb, when I went back to regular ol' GIMP...

Picked at random: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2010/02/hands-on-new-single-window-mode-makes-gimp-less-gimpy/

GIMP 2.8 will be the first official stable release to include the new single-window mode. The GIMP developers recently announced that they are tentatively planning to release GIMP 2.8 in December 2010. This release date, which is almost a year from now, is only a loose approximation of when they think that the program will be ready. They caution that the schedule is not set in stone.

LoL! :D

I've been using 2.8 for over a week and it seems to be all we had hoped for. Click on Windows and then Single Window Mode to get what we have been waiting for. Stable, as far as I see.

I used GIMP 2.7.5 for a few months. It was a German crack, that I found in someone's PPA.

The dependencies got mangled during the transition to Ubu 12.10, and I never could get GIMP 2.7.5 to re-install. Thus, my return to GIMP 2.6

Heh! I'd forgotten how kludgey "Classic" GIMP was. Major step backwards -- like going back to Gnome2/WinXP.

I'd all but given up on the idea of GIMP 2.8.0 being available in the Ubu repos.

I feel like I hit the Powerball!

You might like this as well then.

Nice find! Thanks!

And, toward the bottom of that page ("even more effects and filters"):

Gimp have a google+ page which has lots of interesting stuff. The pace of development is picking up. They have already converted most of the goat invasion branch (what will eventually become 2.10) to gegl operations - lots of work to be done on the filters though.

Yep! They finally pushed GIMP over the hump. Sure, it took them three years, but they got it right!

IMO, GIMP 2.6 was seriously flawed. Technically, it was okay, but the user interface left a lot to be desired. 2.8 is a joy to use, by comparison.

It'll be interesting to see where it goes from here...

Thanks, just installed 2.8 on 12.04 and it works great.

The "Single-Window Mode" is excellent; maybe now I'll ditch photoshop w/wine!

I was excited, because I like my development releases to be free of all ppa's, so i've been waiting and waiting. Finally!

Our pennies have now been discontinued in Canada so I thought I would put up a cameo in memory of the 'penny' using Gimp 2.8.0 . :)

Niiiiiice! :-)

I wish the U.S. would retire its pennies. The lousy things cost more to produce than they're worth.

Upgraded to 2.8 thru german ppa on webupd8 now can't use, re-install or uninstall....dependency hell (haven't seen it for ages!)

Any advice to re-install 2.8?

Tom

The "German PPA" crack quit working for me, when I downloaded the 12.10 chaintool.

The task, then, became getting rid of all the remnants of the German crack... so I could install GiMP 2.6, and it wasn't easy.

Once GiMP 2.8 hit the official repos, it was a simple matter to upgrade from 2.6 to 2.8.0.

So, my recommendation is to forget the German crack -- purge it from your machine -- then, try installing GiMP 2.8.0 from the official repos. ;)

Just checked my Tomboy Notes:

_To fix gimp libbabl-0.0.so.0 error_

sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get purge gimp libgegl* libbabl* sudo apt-get install gimp sudo apt-get clean

Gotta run. BBL! ;)
