The problem I see is that we have allowed referral links for years. I don't mind seeing them in signatures, but if someone joins the forum to specifically post a referral link, I'm against the.

I'm uneasy with referral links in sigs - I find them spammy.

I was thinking something along these lines:

Referral links in sigs - disallow. People who sign up simply to post referral links - jail or even spam ban depending on circumstances. Established members - may post their links in single posts in the existing referral threads but not as OPs or elsewhere. Problem with that is that we only have Ubuntu One and Dropbox referral threads atm (I believe) so we may have to create others.

Problem with that is that we only have Ubuntu One and Dropbox referral threads atm (I believe) so we may have to create others.I'm not fond of them, but straddling Elfy's fence (must it be barbed wire?) as to (dis)allowing them - especially with Ubuntu One in the mix.

I know this is admin territory but I would like to add my 2c... if I have now done my time and I have gotten my 25 posts and I am allowed a signature, why can't I have a referral link that fall within the rules of how it looks size etc? What is the harm... If I am a spammer getting to 25 is tough, then I have to post more posts to have people see my signature which will expose me even faster. This would be a pretty bad spammer strategy.

Fwiw, and to add my tuppence worth, I am ok with referral links provided they are linux related, most that I see, at least from memory, are up front with what they are and the benefit to both the poster and anyone who clicks on them.
