Reinstating Tips & Tutorials

There was a thread started in SCC about re-opening the Tips & Tutorials sub-forum, I've started this thread, so that we can throw back and fourth any ideas, suggestions and anything else anyone has to say.

This thread isn't just for adding +1's, let us know what you really think.

I think my view on the current state of it is well known - I'm now convinced that we did the wrong thing.

I'm +1 to re-opening tutes - without moderation, but with a 'Health warning'

I think I've made my feelings know about it, and I still feel the need for some moderation, but if everyone else thinks that we don't need it, I'll go with the majority. +1 to re-opening Tips & Toots.

Edit I would also like to add that we should leave the threads open for editing for an indefinite time.

+1 (this and stuff like to no editing after a few days was implemented a bit too quickly perhaps)

+1 to this. As far as not moderating is concerned, I would prefer this.

Indeed. I don't want to rake over old history, but I was unhappy with the restriction imposed on editing posts. We should simply remove the restriction, imo.

+1 to both. Would it be possible to have them set to automatically close after the Ubuntu version reaches EOL?

We have asked Canonical IS to install several plugins/mods, one of them is an auto-closing mod. I'm sure we can set something like this up once they have done the security checks, and enabled them.

+1 (or is that a +2?) Moderating T&T means someone must know enough to approve them... but no moderation might mean bad info slips in. (Guess that's what the Community is here to fix). I can appreciate the intent of the editing restriction, but wonder if the problem severity justified the action. I just don't want to get into "Method of the month".

Perhaps they should be reinstated, with Elfy's health warning, but also have them reviewed by ourselves. If we approve something that shouldn't have been, I would trust the community to report the post.

We don't approve anything else? What's the difference between a post anywhere else and in a tutorial forum?

I think the wiki does get reviewed eventually though. Perhaps a test should be run to see?

Wiki (communiyt) get's reviewed by people looking at them and changing them - which doesn't help someone who killed their install before someone changed the wiki page ;)

Mixed feelings here about reopening, similar to some of the points raised here and in the FF&H thread.

On the plus side, some people might be more comfortable with using a forum. On the down side, it's easy for it to be [s]filled[/s] cluttered with outdated material, which raises the issue of how best to monitor and, where required, moderate.

popey has raised an interesting point in his latest post.

My question "is it fixed" is simply to find out if the issue of "only OP and staff can edit" has been resolved, because that's a very real issue.

I think this is a valid concern, it does need to be maintained. Regardless of platform guides do need to be kept updated. I have a suggestion: Create a forum team where members can edit posts in the tutorial forum.

I've already offered to help test and maintain any tutorials - with the caveats i have provided.

I see a lot of us posting the same info over and over. It might be good to be in Tutorials & Tips.

But at what point then should info be in the wiki?

I guess I assume the wiki is peer reviewed, but I see a lot of older info in it also. Standard posts have dates & we close them when they get older as we know the info may get stale. But if we are moderating Tutorials & Tips is that not even more updated than the wiki and the wiki really should be the one updated and time & effort spent? Or if Tutorial is really good, should we then work with the creator like we did when closed and move to the wiki? Who decides?
