Ubuntu Members Only Bump Thread

Great idea! I'm not as active as I was, but I'll still try and put in the odd hour or so. :)

I think it might be a good idea to try and keep this quiet. I can see this being added to the general 'moderators/forum members are dictators blah blah' (mis-)conception that some of the forumgoers seem to have.

Frankly we'd hope that those people that are able to use the area are able to treat this as it is intended.

It's a whole lot easier to close a forum than to create one :)

Oh! What I meant was that having a separate forum for members might increase the feelings of separation that some non-members have. I didn't mean that we'd be misbehaving. :P

Some forum users may see it as elitist others may see it as a perk. Who knows. ;)

They won't be able to see it - anymore than you can see the all the sub-forums that I can :)

But to be honest if people have an issue with it they know what to do about it ;)

Presumably, then, it won't show up in the activity stream or in "current activity" thingie in my profile.

In any case, I'd think that anyone who's been around the internet a time or two would be used to the idea of mod/staff/member forums that the unwashed masses can't see.

Not quite - it's in the activity stream and you're profile IF you have access to the forum itself. Similar to you not being able to see all the things that I can see in the activity stream or my profile.

That was my point. I was suggesting that perhaps we keep quiet about this section. IDK.

I used to worry about that kind of thing quite a bit.

But I've been around long enough to know that some people just have a chip on their shoulders. We could stand on our heads or make the world revolve in the other direction, and they still wouldn't change their minds. If they feel resentful about the existence of this forum, it's because they already feel that way and this is just the "evidence" that they need to bolster that opinion.

I mean, it's not like we're going to be going around and saying, "We've got this new forum and YOU HAVEN'T"... :)

Sometimes there's no accounting for people. As annoying as they can be, I wouldn't worry too much about those well balanced people who have a chip on BOTH shoulders..... :D

Being late to the game is what happens when one only looks at subscribed sub-forums. I am glad I finally noticed this area.

I wouldn't worry about people finding out and being jealous. I am sure if people thought about it, then they'd know the mods and admins would have to have their own areas to communicate about management issues.

I think this is a great way for us to keep a communication line open for ubuntu members to communicate with each other and with the staff to find positive ways to handle some of the issues which may be on their minds.

Did you see a notice at top when you logged in?

I know you aren't asking me, Elfy, but I saw the notice at the top a couple of days or so after you created the forum. I got my first glimpse of it in the activity stream, as I may have said.

Where have all the forum-members-but-not-staff gone? We've only had three visit this thread; most of the visitors have been our esteemed moderators.

They probably haven't seen the notice (which I personally found rather unobtrusive, which isn't what you want in this situation).

Maybe they need a blanket PM or something.

On that forum, promotion to mod status is rare, so you don't need to worry much about someone getting promoted and then seeing the horrid things we said about him/her. :oops: Whereas here one would need to be a lot more circumspect and restrict it to "what do you think/do when people do x in a post?"

I might have the occasional support question that I'd rather not ask in the main forums, for fear that I'd get jumped on by the haters. But then, maybe I'm just a bit too sensitive.

Sounds kinda like how our er... staff area is run.

My feelings are about the same as Iowan.. I think anything can be discussed as long as it is within the guidelines in the CoC. :)

Now I for one would have liked to have told people in here - after we'd told the rest of the staff - about Discourse before everyone else got to know - but [s]other idiots appear to think that communication is a lost art form[/s] Canonical Communication Methods lost us that opportunity.

We'll try to use it to propogate information we think you should know - example, it's likely you'd get to see changes to the CoC before anyone else.

If you've got ideas - bring them up here - you have our ear.

No need for apologies :) I probably didn't make myself very clear, I appear to have slept on a bed of nails and ended up getting up at about 4:30 am.

I'm just putting my perspective - more from my position - would not be very fair for staff to be commenting on what might be going on with people.

Thanks; poison ivy is one thing that I do very thoroughly- I've rarely been able to beat it without some form of intense medication. Extra points for many, many little bumps. :D

Well... I did break my mail server after upgrading from squeeze to wheezy the other day....

That's why I'm still too scared to run a VPS. And I'd be worried about it turning into a spam machine when I wasn't looking.

As long as you use strong passwords and make sure your mail server isn't an open relay, you should be "ok" ;)

My problem was because of a change between the way dovecot is configured between the version in Squeeze and the version in Wheezy, so I need to do moar debugging to find out what the problem lies.

Ah, so it's not only Ubuntu that breaks things when you upgrade...

Who said that I was prompted to ask for technical support for an email setup that my work BUMPed over from a Yahoo-powered shambles provided by their ISP to something in house that is MS based and that currently seems to be in a very broken state? I haven't let on yet that I've noticed that they've outsourced their spam filtering.

The reaction to YouTube is probably a hangover from the days when I was on dialup, and, more recently, had limited bandwidth.

Yeah, I have been trying out Proxmox on sandyd's suggestion and it kicks the crap out of vbox.

Now installing Debian on this box has been uh... pain in the butt, but thanks to an unofficial netinstall cd with non-free firmware I am making progress!

Here's to hoping I don't run into problems with copying all the files back to the raid array... I'll be using LVM this time cuz I'm starting from scratch for all intents and purposes.

I will also not be using this brand of RAID card in the future... it choked when I tried to build the open source drivers on Raring, so it will probably need moar source code changes if/when I decide to run Ubuntu again.

BOO. :( I kinda fan into the same thing with the custom ROM on my ZTE Warp... It exhibits the same hiccups that the stock firmware does, but I'm sticking with it cuz it seems to have moar features like tethering and no stupid noisy splash screen with the carrier's logo on it when I turn the phone on.

When you are trying to be discrete and your phone is set to silent and then this annoying splash screen plays, it ruins everything. ;p

Bump for having a continual "out of memory" error when starting linux on Laptop. Thought it was linux (though it couldn't be, because it was running fine before), and started up the Win8 DVD, which ran extremely slowly.

Ran Memtest, which showed no errors (yay for corsair vegenance!)

Ran the Win8 dvd again, and after 4h, loaded up to the install window. During partitioning, it claimed it couldn't install on the disk, and red warning signs popped up in my brain.

Yanked out the HDD, put a new WD one in, and it was working again...

I assume the HDD was messing up the IRQs or something...

(btw, this just makes me trust Toshiba products less and less, this was a toshiba HDD).

Now I have to find a nice computer store on my next stop...

And for taking the back off and removing the microSD card which serves as an HDD for the device; popping it into my laptop and discovering 1.87 GB (on a 4 GB card) of UNALLOCATED SPACE. A few quick fdisk commands and now I have double the storage on the same ereader for no extra cost. \me fistpumps.

Bump for one of my switches acting up. Apparently it is either taking too long to respond to DHCP broadcasts or is not passing them along. My mum's pc is hooked up to a 5 port switch which is hooked up to a 8 port switch which is hooked up to the router...

Server (with static IP) is fine, but it looks like her machine won't grab an IP via DHCP at random times. Most of the time this occurs when the backup script kicks off around midnight, so heat shouldn't be a problem..

As a sidenote: MegaCLI wasn't that hard to get working, but the Management software freaked out on me after I used alien to convert it from a rpm to a deb.

My work sometimes involves getting up in front of people and doing a spot of [s]waffling[/s] talking. I have a tendency to worry about opening my foot and inserting my mouth.

If someone had said to me seven years ago that I'd end up enjoying speaking in public, I'd have said they were nuts.

Double bump for running into issues installing php5-fpm on a clean Debian 7 OpenVZ template.

So far google has been less than helpful, but php5-fpm starts when launched with the -n switch, so I need to do more research.

The whole purpose of this VPS is to be used as a mail server.. and I have a feeling I will just drop Roundcube and just run with dovecot + postfix and leave it at that, especially if php5 isn't cooperating.

Bump for moving house and having a tech from my ISP come out to run some cable for the TV in my bedroom. He used a 1 to 3 splitter and now the modem they provider has an orange link light and I have no internet access at the new place (or the old place as they transferred service). Another tech is supposed to be out tomorrow to look at it.

As it stands now, the modem is in the living room and my server(s) will be in the bedrooms. That's going to be a lot of cable to run along the baseboards (or maybe even under the end of the carpet, not sure).

They have to decide I recommended a new install because the current system is suffering from several power outs (with no UPS in place). fsck did it's stuff but it was crazy messed up. If they are on a budget I suggested CentOS, only because it will at least be familiar. Ubuntu server is an option but I need to find out yet if the software they use has any special requires. Currently it's back up and running the old RHEL and I'm awaiting feedback.

It's all a bit crazy really because it's just running this one bit of software. There is another server in the building and I did suggest running a VM in that etc... etc...

I'll bump back when it gets interesting

I have had technicians installing heavy electronic equipment in racks. Some of those slides are cheaply made. They require extra care while installing the equipment in the racks. It may not be solely the tech's fault. :)

When I saw 8 servers on rails in a rack, I realized you are not talking about the 8 to 16 blade enclosures that I have dealt with. Pizza boxes -- shoot them. :)

Well, she got the Surface Pro 2. She couldn't get it to connect to our home wifi network. It took me a little while to figure it out. It seems the keyboard doesn't have a Caps-Lock LED or and on-screen Caps-Lock indicator.

Bump for getting Firefox 26 pushed down, which broke one of the addons I have been using for a long long time - Download Statusbar. Granted it hasn't been updated since 2011, but it did one job and did it well.

Since FF 26 removed some legacy stuff, it is incompatible so now I need to find another download bar addon.

I recently found and started using https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/downthemall/?src=cb-dl-featured ... it isn't a bar and opens a pop-up but it seems reliable to make sure you get anything you try to download at maximum bandwidth (with a resume functions that is always handy).

Thanks! I've been looking for another addon that adds a bar to the bottom of the screen when any downloads are active. So far I have found this one, but the interface isn't the same as the old Download Statusbar. At least it is being actively developed, at least for now.

At one time I did all the work on my cars. Then one day I opened the hood on a new car and didn't find a distributor, carburetor, spark plugs, etc. That is when I gave up and took my car to the mechanic's shop.

Now, going to a mechanic is like going to a doctor. Even with an appointment you wait an hour, you don't know what the diagnosis means, and it costs way to much.

Bump for understanding that one. I had an engine block freeze and blow out the head gasket. I was outside taking the engine apart to replace the head gasket in freezing temperatures. I am so glad I have never had to do something like that again. The sad thing is I really didn't know precisely what I was doing. I was looking some things up in a Chilton auto repair manual. :)

Heh. At least there aren't that many components to a toilet, as opposed to a computer or a car.. :p

Bump for getting dd-wrt on this Asus RT-N16 after a bit of fighting with the stock firmware.

So far it is running "fine" except the wireless is stuck at 65Mbps just like my old 300Mbps router. I think it's due to interference, though. At least this router is gigabit, even though I have a switch already.

You can't see the house from that picture, that's the tool shed, garage and storage shelter. We got rid of the wood stove years ago, as it added to the already huge amount of fly-ash that came from the 6 sawmills that were here at the time. A couple have closed since, and all the wood waste is now trucked to a electric co-generation plant that manages to capture the fly-ash before it is released into the atmosphere.

We only have two cold spells a year where the temps go down to -30°C (-22°F) or lower, the rest of the time average temps are in the 5°C (41°F) to -10°C (14°F) range this is a fairly dry area, where the humidity is rarely above 70%. We use natural gas for heat, and seeing as British Columbia is an exporter of gas, prices are fairly reasonable.

For currently running a ddrescue on a clients Laptop, it's just finished after 18hrs

The cat is around 10 years old, and the vet is prescribing some meds and a special diet to get his weight back up (he lost 2 pounds over the last year with no diet changes).

Thanks! I'm glad it isn't diabetes both from a cost as well as a quality of life standpoint. I was looking into and vials of insulin are quite expensive. We also have to change his food, and the vet recommended science diet ($$$$), but we'll give it a shot cuz he needs to regain the weight he lost.

Somehow I doubt he will be very happy with having to "take" a pill every 12 hours.

Blow in the cat's nose when you put the pill in it's mouth. It causes them to swallow. Drop the pill or capsule as far back over the tongue as possible, then immediately close the mouth and blow on the cat's nose which will encourage it to swallow.

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) I use was having problems with two of their major internet routes between where I live and the UK. For two days I could rarely get to anything in the UK, including Ubuntu Forums. I was starting to get angry.

Lost my connection Sunday Morning too, all me installs on this box.. after a lot of fixes I am just now back up on my primary preferred system (about 30 minutes past). -Pulled out my backup box, no will boot ! - It has been a struggle, and a lot of the fixing was just plumb magic. I detest when things just fix themselves. switched out the ethernet card Bent pin on the original ethernet card (when ??) Mac not recognized by the router (re cloned ) corrupted file on my "work" install

Got the internet up and working on the 12.04 installed system, then the 13.04 Lubuntu was working, no workie in my "work" install... hummm ! Believe it or not a sound troubleshooting procedure is a good thing . I found my /etc/network/interface file corrupted (step 3). Copied over the file from Lubuntu install, rebooted, and to my amazement and utter delight -> those 5 dots appeared rather than the horrid 4 dots !

BUMP for remembering an exam question I was expected to anwer many years ago, something to do with calculating change and counting coins, and drawing a flowchart.

The only part I have left is the analysis of the system requirements or something... I'm not sure what that is supposed to be so off to do more research...

It all really depends on who you are creating the POS for, is it for a Mom and Pop corner grocery store, a small chain store, or a major retail chain, they all have different needs.

The Mom and Pop store can be a little harder to use, as there is just a small number of people that will be using it, the small chain should be set up with ease of use in mind, and maybe some form of transaction storage, so that it can communicate with the main server at the end of the day. The major retail chain system should be designed with ease of use in mind, as staff turn over is usually fairly high, so training cost should be kept in mind, this type of system is typically run as terminals connected directly to a server.

Yeah, I got over my head because it'll be for "specialty stores" like the ones in airports that sell you overpriced crap.

I haven't had problems with kernel upgrades in years; however, they make me paranoid. I always do a backup before upgrades. I have had problems with kernel upgrades in the past. I just upgraded the kernel for 12.04.4 to 3.2.0-60 without problems. Maybe some day I will not be so paranoid. :)

I know what you mean... when I was running my old RAID card, I would dread kernel upgrades cuz the raid drivers wouldn't compile correctly via DKMS and if I rebooted, the array wouldn't be there. I would have to reinstall the drivers manually and it would work fine...

So glad I moved to a card that has support built into the kernel..

I don't think I will be spending over US$1000 on a computer any time soon. I retired from my real-life job a year ago and Mrs. Old Grey Wolf retired a month ago so she could spend time with the grand children. The good thing is that the computers I had in order to keep up with the latest technology for my job should last for quite a few years. They are rarely turned on. :)

I know what you mean. My mum's PC was built in 2009 and outside of swapping out the CPU on it with the one from my old server (It was running a Pentium Dual Core originally, now it's got a Core2Duo) and installing Win7 on it, I haven't really done much to it.

Well, I am not a gamer and I hope the computers I have turned off will be able to run a Linux distro 5 years from now for my basic needs.

I just don't think they will be obsolete that soon. Qaud-core with 8GB of RAM and 500GB to 1TB HDDs. Although I thought the same thing in the 1980's when we had computers with 64MB RAM in 2GB hard drives. :)

I remember running a machine with 8MB RAM and a 500MB hard drive. Funny thing the machine was manufactured in 1992 and was a 486 50Mhz. It was like super fast!

I remember going to one of those junk/used equipment sales in the late 80s.

There was this humungous, heavy-looking device, about the size of a flatbed scanner (20 in x 12 in x 3 in ???), and a guy sitting beside it.

I asked him what it was. He told me that it was a 5 MB hard drive. He then added, "It's not mine!" - with an expression that suggested he'd be highly embarrassed to be associated with such a relic. :lol:

71degC in a CPU under stress is low (well the last time I cared to know more it was :p) Nice thing about GPU temps are you buy it as a package with the cooler so typically you would never overheat it as long as there is some semblance of airflow in the case.

All of these numbers and there limits really only become relevant when you venture into O/C territory... some fun and games and broken hardware to be had :D

I have one such machine under the table. A year or two back I BUMPed the modem and sound card out, and put in USB 1.0 and ethernet.

So far I have reinstalled Win7 about 4 times now to see if I can get it to boot to a desktop in less than 10 minutes.

Why it's taking so damn long, I do not know.

EDIT: On a hunch (and a lovely error saying the Desktop was inaccessible) I have removed the partitions from the 4TB data drive and windows boots really, really fast now. I wonder if I got a bad drive.

Any by really fast, I mean, I get to the from POST to the desktop in ~ 13 seconds with the 4TB drive partitioned.

Unknown. I installed all the chipset drivers and whatnot and the improvement was seen even before doing that. All I did differently was boot into a *nix livecd, delete the partition from the 4TB drive and reinstall Windows and now everything is super fast.

I'm kinda concerned about what might happen if I get all the updates done and then partition of the data drive and assign it a drive letter..

Will it work fine or will it run slow again...

Aye, but for the moment, I think it is going on the back burner cuz only the right rear speaker isn't working now instead of the left front and both rear speakers (!!!) and I am hoping this isn't the precursor to some sort of electrical problem with my car, cuz that would suck.

It's actually really nice. I've not have to RMA something for replacement at Amazon before, but I have with newegg and you usually have to wait until they receive the return and then process the replacement.

Done that; however it was 1 hour 45 minutes on hold and 15 minutes talking with tech support going through "the script". Then I spent half a day the following week for the repair tech to show up. Fortunately, I got a repair tech that was fairly knowledgeable. When I logged into the computer he saw that I was running Linux and said, "That's OK I'm a Computer Science student and you don't have to reboot. I'll just call the Comcast office, tell them that the CD isn't working for some reason, and have them register the new modem on their end".

Bump for being astonished about how loud a hard drive can be when it's reading/writing data. I guess I am spoiled from only having an SSD in this computer while I was getting a replacement HDD.

My wife wanted to watch some movie with me on our big-screen TV using Netflix. The TV uses HDMI for computer interface. I found that the only computer I have that has HDMI is my laptop. We watched the movie on her laptop screen. It was sooo interesting that I can't remember what it was or what it was about. :)

Anyway, I decided to boot Window 7 Home Premium, and update it for the next time. When it loaded, I checked for updates and found I had not updated since I retired from my real-life job over a year ago. I guess I didn't need Windows until now. I spent the next 2 1/2 hours babysitting the computer while it updated and rebooting. I used my notebook for surfing the web while I waited.

I need to put a calendar entry that reminds me to update Windows every 3 months.

I picked up a set of Kenwood KFC-1395PS door speakers, and I'm very happy with them. So far I haven't managed to blow them up, I've gone through two sets of 6X9's so far. :(

Actually, I've found it to be quite cool when you tune a sound system so the subwoofer hits with the bass drums. Its quite a cool effect. It can almost trick you into thinking the band is playing just for you in your car! :)

I'm currently looking at these Kenwood KFC-P709PS for the front and Kenwood KFC-6965S for the back.

Crutchfield also sells brackets I can use to mount the tweeters in the dash. :)

My only issue with those front speakers is I will need to run some wire thru the door and into the dash, but once the door panels and dash are taken out, that shouldn't be THAT big of a deal.

I'll have to wait until I paid off the $1500 car repair I just had done last week and get a replacement dash as I doubt my current (very cracked) dash will hold up to being removed, even if there are just 4 screws holding it in...

I will work on it tomorrow. I am not in the mood right now to deal with Safe Mode and editing the Windows registry.

I placed my order but the earliest they will know if they get those speakers back in stock will be 5/5.

Double bump for putting in the order for the front speakers. I should wait until this class is over to put them in, but at least I'll have them here and ready to install.

Well, from my experience with that. Just create a new profile and copy the old data to the new profile. Delete the old profile. Bam Done.

That is what I am doing. I will let her try everything before I delete the old profile.

Run chkdsk and/or hdd manufacture diags on the hard drive, too.

Double bump for finding the service manual for my car (well the 2004 version, but it still applies..)

Better description on what I need to remove to get to the speakers and how much torque needs to be applied to the bolts when they are put back in.

Well, I had already tried Method 1 in the link. It didn't work. I have completed Method 2, and waiting for my wife to test it. If it works for her I may delete the old profile.

BuMP for the conundrum of OS's... currently using Windows 7 and it does everything I need without any issues what so ever. But with 14.04 dropping today I just need to install it (but I don't know which flavour). I think I need to buy a Mac.

Having a conflict in information between different install guides sucks. One says I need a T50 Torx socket and the other says I need a T55 Torx socket.

One is from Crutchfield and the other is from Mopar.

The dash is only held on by 4 screws and the A pillars (which pop off).

They wanted to write the entire CC number, expiration date and CVV down on the back of the sales receipt and that's a big NOPE from me.

I haven't BUMPed into one of those gadgets for many years. I very nearly scored a free lunch at a mall in Auckland many years ago, courtesy of a bank that was filming a commercial for its credit card: the technology of the time was based around such a machine, and was referred to in the jingle.

I ran into one of those things late last year. I stayed at a bed-and-breakfast place where that was what they used for credit card transactions. At least they still work if the power goes off (which it didn't in this case - I think the place was just low-tech).

Yeah, but they had problems with both swiped cards and punching in the card number manually where it wouldn't authorize.

I would have thought they would do voice authorization, but maybe their system isn't set up for it.

Without knowing more about their setup, and from what the cashier said after talking to their help desk, it sounded like there was a problem with their credit processor.

I'll have to remember to bring cash with me if I go there in the future. I've had to pay with cash at that particular restaurant more often than I care to.
