Hello,

Thought you would like to know we've enabled a facebook plugin for likes and whatnot. Not a major feature, but just relaying information to you.

Some of the admins (especially coffeecat and myself) have very little clue about facebook, so we're not sure we've set it up correctly.

You should all see the like button now though on threads which are available to anyone on the forum:

If anyone can help test, that would be super useful. Thank you :)

Note: It isn't available in any threads in this hidden area.

Well I can't really say I approve of the big blue brother appearing here. But thank you for the information, I'm sure people in general will love it. :)

I'll admit i'm not a big fan either, but if people use these services then I think we should at least look into integrating them here.

I'm looking at a more generic plugin, with other platforms. This one might be a better alternative - http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=264711

Oh, certainly. I wasn't criticising, just commenting. :)

That seems like a much better/fairer idea, especially as I imagine facebook will not be around for ever.

#5

Not a fan of FB myself at all either; wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

But +1 to the admins for working on adding functionality!

#6

Well, that explains why I had Ghostery telling me it blocked some stuff related to facebook.

#7

....so nobody is going to be able to test it then as we all use ghostery :D

#8

Bruce Schneier explains what he uses to give users the control to enable/disable the Facebook buttons. http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2013/03/changes_to_the.html Maybe this is something that can be implemented. It would show that we care enough to be socially friendly, while giving those who prefer to opt out the option to do so.

Even with Ghostery, we can use the dislike buttons.

#9

I was going to say, that the Facebook connection is broken here, then I remembered I have the Facebook disconnect extension installed here on Chromium, so no bothersome social networking icons for me. :-D

Looks like it, haha.

Have any of you seen the button used OR used it yourself? Just curious to see if it actually works ;)

I've seen the button, and it seemed to do something if I clicked on it. So I think it works. :)

#12

I'm not on Facebook (how 20Century of me) so I'm no help.:)

#13

I have clicked Like on a few pages, but it isn't showing on my Facebook. It may not be working correctly because of Ghostery.

<offtopic> @uRock- your "Business remix" link is 404... </offtopic>

#15

Semi on topic, the official Forum Facebook Page has been up 1 hour and is already at 15 likes. I'm guessing that is okay?

Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here besides me who *doesn't* use Facebook?

#18

oldos2er said: Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here besides me who *doesn't* use Facebook?

Yes, me. I've not yet been convinced that I need it in my situation.

#19

I use it, but only to keep track of other online friends that I've met along the way - Warcraft, Guild Wars, Diablo...

*snickers*

#20

oldos2er said: Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here besides me who *doesn't* use Facebook?

Yes. :)

#21

I started using Facebook at the suggestion of a couple of colleagues, stopped using it for a while. If it wasn't for a couple of causes I'm interested in, I would probably stay away.

#22

I have a couple of groups who schedule events and I gossip with coworkers on Facebook. I used to spend a lot of time on there, but it became a religious/political tool, which has caused a lot of strife. I watch many of my friends get in heated debates about anything and everything, because they can't tell the difference between insults and disagreements.

With friends like that I can see why! lol

Now, why does this remind me of certain types on these very same forums? :)

Irihapeti said: Now, why does this remind me of certain types on these very same forums? :)

That is an Internet problem, which is only getting worse on FB.

#26

oldos2er said: Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here besides me who *doesn't* use Facebook?

That'll be me too

#27

You can add me to the list too.

#28

I don't use it.

#29

oldos2er said: Just out of curiosity, is there anyone here besides me who *doesn't* use Facebook?

I have a facebook page but i only tend to visit it on its birthday and at christmas.

Really not a big fan but others like it so..

#30

I figure Google has enough data on me, Facebook doesn't need it too.

#31

I told some young, trendy Toastmasters friends that I'm not on Facebook because I'm a geek and somewhat conscious of security issues. They probably thought I'm a dinosaur. At least I can now go back and tell them that I'm in good company with certain forum staff*. :)

*Whom I do NOT regard as dinosaurs, BTW.

#32

But...but... Dinos are _cool_!

#33

Rawr :)

Face what??? ;)

#35

For that comment, you can face the music!

Irihapeti said: For that comment, you can face the music!

Better the music than the book - that sounds painful. A book to the face? ;)

#37

Iowan said: Better the music than the book - that sounds painful. A book to the face?

Does that have similar effects to a teacher applying the board of education to the seat of learning? :D

#38

We could always throw the book at you. :)

No, wait... Staff are supposed to throw the book at lowly members. :P

(Drat! I'm going to get that infraction after all......) /hides

I am so social online I don't have time for friends...

"Like"

#41

Well the Facebook page is upto about 120 likes in a couple of days. To me at least, it looks like some do use Facebook ;)

#42

i dislike facebook, so....

#43

So they've started asking for other social media plugins...

Of course, it wouldn't matter how many you added, there'd always be one more (in someone's mind) that absolutely should be there.

#44

Looks like it works:

#46

People actually LIKE moderators??

They must be mad. :)

#47

Maybe it was the other mods...

/conspiracytheory

#48

Then there are those who seem to compulsively LIKE anything that moves....

Or was it one of those [s]deluded ignoramuses[/s] individuals who seems to think that I'm a good addition to the mod team? Pffffffffttttt!!!

/goes looking for head-shrinking hat, non-tinfoil variety

I have a Facebook account but only go there if someone wants me directly.

#50

While we are on the subject, is there a way to see (on Facebook) things you have liked, as I don't,t know if I ever have?.......

#51

I am an old, luddite, antediluvian, troglodyte grannie who has thus far held out against all the "you oughta join facebook" malarkey.

I need good, cogent reasons - not just "you gotta get with the times"

#52

+1 for not using Facebook. Seems I'm in good company :)

Those elastic straps wear out. You also have to keep buying ink and paper. It's all a scam to get more of your money. :)

#58

must have a troglodyte version here - mine has a slate, chalk and a rag ...
