What's the story behind your forum name?

What's the story behind your forum user name? What does it mean?

What caused you to think it up? Or did someone else?

I'll go first. Mine is the Maori version of my middle name, Elizabeth. I'd been learning Maori and I thought it sounded cool (how lame is that? :) )

I couldn't use my first name, because it had been taken.

I also use it on some other forums, but not (currently) on Facebook or other social media sites.

*Yes, there may have been a thread about this in the distant past, in the Cafe or somewhere. Never mind.* ;)

Wonder if this thread would work better in the Cafe..? as for my name... well lets just say this is the third account I had on the forum and I run out of options/ideas :p

My handle comes from Richard Matheson's nove *I am Legen*d. The protagonist's old friend and co-worker is a Jewish man named Ben Cortman, who after becoming infected with the prevailing disease hangs around the protagonist's house, generally making a nuisance of himself. Hm, sadly appropriate...

There already is a thread on the same subject in the Cafe, I haven't seen it for quite a while, have a look here.

Mine's pretty simple, I live in the Cariboo area of British Columbia, Canada, and because there were already several users with cariboo as part of their user name, I added my street number to the end to the end of it.

Interestingly enough, there is another member named Cariboo1938, that lives in a small community about 90 kilometres south of here, he had the same idea as me, but added his biirth year to the end of cariboo.

Before cell phones and the Internet, in the small town were I lived, we used Citizens Band radios to communicate when away from our land line phones. My handle was Grey Wolf and I am Old now.

I used to use OS/2.

So do we all have a contest to see who's the oldest? :)

I had several handles before my dad got tired of the neighbors complaining about my voice bleeding through their stereos and other electronics. It was a really old base station that I inherited. It came with a full schematic and I was able to make some adjustments and turn it up to about 50 watts. I also had a big antenna that which was on a pole about 20 feet above the house. ;)

My nick name is pretty simple. At first I had created a new account with iRock as my nick. I quickly started to think the name made me appear arrogant, because I didn't really rock when it came to knowing my way around Linux at the time, so I asked bodhi to change it it uRock which has many deserving puns attached. You rock because you helped getting my system working the way I wanted. ubuntu rocks! Unity rocks! And I used it as a D&D character's name, though hind sight says it doesn't really match a half-dwarf thief.

There was a guy that lived about a mile from me that did that. I watched my Rx meter peg out. I got angry because he prevented others from talking. I connected my 10 meter, 200 watt, HAM radio transmitter with a full-wave antenna to my CB. For about 5 or 10 minutes, every time the guy talked I dead keyed him into oblivion. When I was done the other people on CB were ROTFL. I can't post what they were saying, NSFW. I disconnected the HAM transmitter because you are not permitted to transmit on CB channels with anything over 4 or 5 watts. ;)

LMAO! Yup! Darn FCC and their silly regulations. I have thought about getting into HAM, but my wife won't let me have but so many "geek" hobbies.

I was somewhat abrasive with those whose political views were the opposite of mine -- which is to say "wrong". I pointed out logical fallacies with statements, historical inaccuracies, ignorance about world events and their general lack of robust brain activity -- either congenital or induced by trauma.

I got kicked off the forum on a daily basis, but just spoofed an new IP address and registered with a different weird name again. QIII was the last name I used before they went with requiring a non-anonymous email address for registration and I couldn't call people out for the brainless, toothless, slack-jawed, mouth-breathing idiots they were anymore without getting perma-banned. So I lost interest.

I never actually explained what my username is.. but I'm sure most of you can guess..

First name, list initial and I use it on "professional" sites. My gaming handle is MoonUnit, so you might see on Steam or something. I blame living near a store that was named Luna while I was in college and a lack of creativity...

bapoumba is the first word that my first son (19 now, talk about time flying by..) said. Not mum or dad, but bapoumba, pointing at an apple (pomme in French). We laughed very hard, he kept on using that word and so did we. When I joined the French ubuntu forums after they were just set up early 2005, he was about 10. His younger brother was 4 and the word still around in the family :) When I joined UF, I kept the same username, and have been using it for anything related to ubuntu.
