Debian vs "Ubuntu minimal"

In one line? Debian is super duper tested for stability but Ubuntu offers right balance for both stability and latest kernels and all the goodies we like to hog on as soon as they are available.
(And if it matter, installing Ubuntu was easier for me than installing debian)

The "Ubuntu minimal" installer -- mini.iso -- is the Debian net install image rebranded to Ubuntu and pointing to Ubuntu repositories.

The best way to see things for your self is download both ISO's and install them in VirtualBox.
That way you can see how both installers work and what you get when it is finished.

That's rather like asking to compare/contrast a banana vs. a bicycle. Some elements are easily comparable, some are not. Your question is too open-ended and vague to be easily answered satisfactorily. They are two bootable versions of Linux, intended for different audiences and different uses, having different features and different development teams. However, one is mostly based upon the other.

Well, in general, other than Unity and the comparatively few Canonical-developed packages, everything in Ubuntu's repos has been brought over from the Debian repos.
Then, it's referred to as the "debian-installer", like here: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/315/builds/74010/testcases.
Run both, you'll see.
Ubuntu has improvements in font rendering, hardware compatibility, and configuration that Debian doesn't offer. Depending on the version you choose, the Debian (Stable) repositories have older versions (tried and true, reliable, solid - but older) of software and their own branding of certain softwares (Iceweasel, for example, is Debian's version of Firefox).
