Atheros AR2413 - unable to connect to *secured* wifi

I can connect to wifi without issue, but have been unable to connect to secured wifi. I've tried different security settings on the router (WEP, WPA, ect), and all fail. The wireless router works with other devices and password being used is the correct one.

I read the subforum instructions, ran the diagnostic (below), and searched the forums, but found no solutions. I am new to Linux / Ubuntu, so I may be missing something simple/obvious - help appreciated!

The problem occurs with the most recent Ubuntu distribution as well.

Aside, I am teacher rebuilding a series of computers to donate to someone unlikely to have a developed computing skillset; I was trying to find the easiest-to-use free OS. I read Mint would be a good option after finding Chrome to be limiting.
