I have a new install of Linux Mint 17 on a MacBookPro10,7. I tried posting on the Mint forums with no luck, and wondered if anyone here might have any advice.
My microphone appears in the Sound panel as if it is working, but no sound is registered next to "Input level" when I make noise.

The volume settings are normal in alsamixer. Pavucontrol also shows the microphone as working:

Naturally, the microphone does not actually work in Skype or Hangouts or any application I tried. In fact, Hangouts immediately pops up a message that the microphone is not working, when I try to start a call.
I'd really appreciate any advice about what might be going wrong...
